Summer Reading Kick-Off at Tompkins Square
Kick off Summer Reading with an all-day celebration in Tompkins Square Park that includes giveaways (including tickets from the NY Yankees,) face painting, tie dye, henna tattoos, photo booths, crafts, games, tech gadgets, and more!
There will also be visits from Sesame Street, the North Shore Animal League, and a slew of neighborhood organizations.
Sesame Street's Grover makes appearances at 10:30am, 12:15pm, and 1:30pm.
10:30am: DJ Dance Party! Get the day started with DJ Carol C, music, bubbles, and beach balls!
11am: Opening Ceremony
11:30am: Drag Queen Story Hour and author Jessica Love
Julián is a Mermaid author Jessica Love and Drag Queen Story Hour's Rev. Yolanda host a fabulous literary experience that celebrates diversity, builds empathy and teaches tolerance. For children of all ages.
12pm: MAPS (Music Art Puppet Sound) artists, Rachel Sherk & Aaron Rourk, lead a fun-filled, art-making project for kids. After a reading from storybooks that feature the moon as a character, kids can make their own moon puppets to take home.
12:30pm: Musical Performance: Third Street Music School -- Featuring music and dance performances by students from Third Street Music School Settlement. Third Street Music School Settlement is the nation's longest-running community music school, offering students of all ages and abilities the opportunity to become the best musicians, dancers, singers and composers that they can be.
1:15pm: Dance Performance: LEGACY is a professional Hip-Hop based dance company founded by Head Director/Choreographer Lacey Thomas.
2pm: NYPL Sings -- A fun sing-along with some fantastic librarians! Musicians from libraries across NYC perform songs from the New York Public Library's Children's Album, NYPL Sings!.
3pm: Music Performance: RPM -- Rocco John Iacovone, Alto Sax; Michael Lytle-Bass, Clarinet; Philip Sirois, Acoustic Bass.
Tables and activities from participating organizations, including: 14th Street Y, Educational Alliance, EVCC, FABnyc, Green Thumb, Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, Lower East Side Girls Club, Safe Horizon, Sixth Street Community Center.
In case of rain, the event will be held at Tompkins Square Library.
