Sugar Hill hosts a FREE fun-filled family day featuring art-making, storytelling, music and more!

  • Movement workshop with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
In keeping with the theme of Thanksgiving as a time to explore the concepts of passage, and world travel. kids consider new ways of moving through space with a modern dance workshop facilitated by members of the dance company Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

  • A special reading of We Came to America
Playdate’s Story Hour features a dynamic reading of Faith Ringgold’s 2016 book in celebration of the first Thanksgiving and the timeless narrative of migrating in search of a new life.

  • Art making inspired by the work of Faith Ringgold and stories from around the globe
In conjunction with the museum's yearlong celebration of the prolific legacy of Faith Ringgold, kids make art inspired by the exhibition Sugar Hill Songbook, with a specific focus on Ringgold's 2016 book, We Came To America.

  • Percussion workshop and Performance
Celebrate the drum as the first instrument that Pilgrims heard upon arriving in America with famed Brazilian jazz drummer Annette Aguilar. Annette teaches about the drums, orchestrates a jam session, and closes the day with a dynamic performance.

Programs and performances are inspired by the museum's new exhibitions on view, Sugar Hill Songbook: Select Work by Faith Ringgold, Justin Favela: Recuérdame, and Yuken Teruya: Cutting Trees.
