Weekend Events in NJ, April 9-10: Go Wild with Bees, Bingo and Borneo, or Mild with Fashion, Flowers and Fossils–mostly FREE!

You know how we love alliteration here at Mommy Poppins and this weekend is full of it--Bees, Bingo, Borneo... yeah, you get it. There is so much fun stuff to do in early spring, so take advantage of the might-be-warm weather or all the indoor possibilities in case of more rain (or snow--could be, it's been a weird spring so far, right?) Have fun!

Weekend Events in NJ, April 2-3: Spring is in the air with birds, planes & openings

Spring is in the air... literally! Apparently Mr. Robin Redbreast and his feathered friends are migrating back to NJ and Newark Museum and the Van Vleck House & Gardens are celebrating with bird-themed events. This weekend also marks the seasonal opening (with lots of fanfare) of historical sites like Cooper Gristmill, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, Historic Speedwell, and Updike Farmstead. Even the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame is opening up the cockpits of its planes in celebration of Spring!

“The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi” at Mile Square Theater

The first thing you need to know about Mile Square Theater in Hoboken is that it is NOT a community theater. Not that we have anything against community theaters, per se, but when you are a professional Equity house with conservatory-trained actors and beautifully-conceived sets and costumes by Broadway and off-Broadway designers, you’d like your potential public to know that you’re not a church group butchering “Hello Dolly!”

Weekend Events in New Jersey, March 26-27: Waffles and Washington, Seals, seashells and School-House Rock–Mostly FREE!

What a weekend we have for you!  Seals’ birthdays on the boardwalk, a Swedish Waffle Party, puppets galore, and a School-House Rock Performance to start with...If you’re ready to get back into nature, create kites in Holmdel;  run for a great reason in Parsippany;  or search for seashells in the Highlands.  March Madness hoops have your home captivated? Then Newark’s your destination for an all-out NCAA celebration.  Indoors, outdoors, all-around—it’s March at its best for families in New Jersey.

Children's Modeling: The Reality

Your child wants to model? Easy, right? There’s agencies and photographers everywhere, reality show castings, extra opportunities…shouldn’t be too difficult, right? Well, think again.  The good news is we’ll give you the inside track on how to get your little top model into the industry; the bad news is that there are more scams and rip-off artists lurking in wait than ever before.  So…read on, and ready yourself for the rocky road to the runway.

Weekend Events in NJ March 19-20: Storytelling, Springfest, Greenfest, and a whole lotta Frogs

Just a few days ‘til Spring officially starts, and there are Springfests, Greenfests and frogs to prove it. Many frogs. All over Jersey. So if your idea of celebrating the end of a long winter is hunting for slimy green animals, this is your weekend to par-tay. If not, you can take in a cool Storytelling festival or watch a defining moment in history with Living Voices theater troupe or a myriad of other non-frog events. Enjoy!

Atlantic City, the Rodeo and Lots More Family Fun

If you thought Atlantic City was only slot machines and cocktail waitresses, think again.  This South Jersey seaside city is reinventing itself as a family destination.

My kids and I took an overnight vacation to Atlantic City last spring, with winning results.  The kids were excited to walk the actual streets whose names they recognized from frequent games of Monopoly.  We headed over to the boardwalk, and though it was too cold to swim, there were lots of activities to keep the kids entertained.  We had a great time visiting the emporium of the weird and freaky, Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Museum.  We hit the famed amusement park, the Steel Pier, and had a ball on the rides and trying our luck at the arcade games.

Spring Fling! Early Spring Activities in NJ

It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so! ~Mark Twain

Oh Mark, you were so wise. Spring is trailing your hand along the baby grass, breathing in that intoxicating smell of possibility, of ditching coats for sundresses, leaving slush behind for the kick-up of magnolia blossoms on the walk to school. It's its own thing, spring, and it needs celebrating. Our Garden State has a slew of great activities from cherry blossom madness to a bluebird meet and greet. Dig in, fellow mothers. We've earned it this year.

NJ Weekend March 12-13: Pi, Pirates, Penguins & St. Patrick's

This weekend, feast on some pi. And no, I didn't forget the 'e'. Princeton is celebrating Einstein's birthday with a Pi party (and there actually will be 'pie' there) and pi-rates are cavorting on Pirate Adventure Day. And if you can stand any more alliteration, there's also a Proper Pets workshop at Turtle Back, a penguin spa at Jenkinson's Aquarium, and of course, more St. Patrick's fun. There's other good stuff too, but none of it starts with 'p', so you'll have to keep reading. Have fun!

FREE & Cheap Theater & Workshops during Family Week at the Theater

During the entire month of March, the New Jersey Theater Alliance offers The Stages Festival, an opportunity for young people to enjoy free theater performances, classes and workshops. That also happens to include Family Week at the Theater, which launches this week with FREE (or deeply discounted) fun events for kids. The website has a great search engine so you can find performances based upon your county and the ages of your kids. Here are some of our favorite picks:
