New Jersey

Weekend Events in New Jersey, February 19-20: Bugs, Beasts, Pitch-Black Tunnels and more, mostly FREE!

Spooky, dark tunnels; creepy animals; bugs, beasts...hey! You’d think it’s Halloween in New Jersey this weekend! But it’s all in fun, and you know the ick-factor scores big with the kids. The super-popular, pitch-black, crawl-through Touch Tunnel finally makes its return to the Liberty Science Center; check out beasts on-stage or in a museum; or learn about “unhuggable animals.” Not into the darker side? There’s t-shirt bags to be sewn, Renaissance art to be re-created and birdhouses to be built. And if you're looking for something to do for President's Day on Monday, check back in tomorrow for a special Prez Day list of events. (Gotta give our Chiefs their props, right?)

NJ Weekend February 12-13: Animals, Animals, Animals!

Animal lovers, this weekend is for you! The Turtleback Zoo has a family program on animal tracks, you can see animal shows at the Super Pet Show in Edison, the annual Great Backyard Bird Count takes place nationwide, and the Newark Museum has elephant art as part of their circus science weekend. And for those who are not animal lovers, get ready for Valentine's day! There is chocolate tasting, chocolate making, maple sugaring, and plenty other of sweet events going on!

Weekend Events in New Jersey, February 5-6: Groundhog Day Party, FREE museums, a Winter’s Day on the Farm and more!

Let’s face it: no groundhog with a shred of common sense is going to be poking his head out in this weather. But we can dream, can’t we? (and celebrate the no-show). Of course, if you’re still loving the romance of snow and ice, you can spend a winter’s day on the farm at Fosterfield’s, or be like the rest of us winter-weary souls and duck inside to a variety of cool museums with FREE admission this weekend. Have a great weekend and never fear, spring is coming (in about six weeks)!

Chinese New Year: Celebrating The Year of the Rabbit in New Jersey

Most of us are familiar with the celebrated Chinatown festivities in New York City that mark the Chinese New Year, but New Jersey also offers several family friendly options. These events include all the good stuff that make a New Year celebration meaningful, including food, dance, music, crafts and a woman who can balance a kitchen sink of dishes on her nose and walk across a bridge of light bulbs. What family outing is complete without that? Whether you want to learn the lion dance, enjoy ancient acrobatics, or just make a paper lantern, the Year of the Rabbit won't disappoint.

NJ Weekend January 29-30: Fire, Ice & Winter Festivals

Winter, snow, and ice may not be my idea of fun, but when you add the word "festival" after them I may just change my mind! This weekend New Jersey brings you two winter fests with ice-cold entertainment like live ice-sculpting and dog sled demonstrations that is balanced off by warming events like a chili cook off, a pancake breakfast, and tons of indoor fun for kids like a puppet show and a Frosty the Snowman musical. Harold and the Purple Crayon is playing on-stage at NJPAC. Older kids can brave the outdoors trying their hand at snowshoeing or searching for bald eagles. Finally, the Morris Museum has a fun "heart art" art project that is free with museum admission.

DIY Kids: FREE Crafts at Lowes, Home Depot & Michaels

Looking for some cheap and fun entertainment for the kids in the cold weather? (and we're talking really cheap because it's really cold...) Look no further than your local DIY outlet. Entertain the kids AND run some errands. Best of all? These events and the craft materials are all FREE!

Weekend events in NJ January 22-23: FREE Wassail Party at Terhune Orchards, An Owl Prowl, Balloon Story Theater and More!

Feel like burning up some old Christmas trees? Or dancing and howling around some apple trees? There’s a lot of outdoor fun in NJ this weekend, so pull on your long underwear and head out. Of course, if you’d rather not freeze your patootie off, you can go indoors for a fairy princess tea party, some Cabin Fever movie shorts or a balloon animal extravaganza. Have a great time!
