MLK Weekend Events

We have five inspiring Martin Luther King Jr Day events lined up for kids on this long weekend! Kids can celebrate MLK Day through art, performance, community events and leadership activities at the Newark Museum, Morris Museum, Arts Council of Princeton, Express Yourself Studios, or the Essex Environmental Center. On Saturday and Sunday participate in special zoo programs at the Turtleback Zoo or Jenkinson Aquarium, explore the outdoors maple-sugaring at Great Swamp or learning how to cook outdoors at Plainsboro Preserve, get hands-on at the New Jersey State Museum's new kids workshops, or make some snowflake inspired art work at the Liberty Hall Museum. Or take advantage of the snow and take the kids skiing on NJ's slopes!

NJ Events January 8-9: FREE Tix to Bari Koral Family Band, The Swan Song of Holiday Lights, Tot Sculpture, Maple Sugaring!

Yes, we're all wiped out from the holidays, but instead of couch potato-ing through the rest of the winter, why not venture out and see what New Jersey has to offer this weekend. We have a great contest for four FREE sets of tickets to the awesome Bari Koral Family band, and you can also finally see the holiday lights you missed because you were too busy during the actual holidays or take part in the wonderful winter activity of maple sugaring. Happy New Year, Jerseyites!

NJ Indoor Playspaces: Beyond the Ball Pit--Bring on Theaters, Laser Tag, Puppet Shows and Go-Karting!

When the winter cold sets in, not only do the kids bounce off the walls, they also manage to turn the house upside-down. Better plan: Let them get the wiggles out somewhere else. Indoor playspaces were created by some very wise adults, let us tell you. Our favorite kid-tested spots will keep the small ones entertained for hours, and you with a clean house (plus some sanity).

NJ Weekend December 18-19: Kwanzaa, a Whoville Feast & Skate with Santa

Only one week left until Christmas!  Keep the kids busy with free festivals like the Kwanzaa Festival at NJPAC with everything from dance classes to crafts, or the free Maplewood Dickens Village Holiday Event with a petting zoo, face painting, horse and wagon rides and holiday crafts.  Grinch lovers can enjoy a Whoville Feast at Liberty Hall Museum with real Roast Beast.  Santa will also be making an early appearance at local ice skating rinks in West Windsor, Roselle, Secaucus and Jersey City.  Finally, check out some holiday lights, either the old fashioned kind in the form of a candlelight tour of the Historic Allaire Village, or the more modern kind at the Turtleback zoo and the Planetarium.

Raising Young Scientists in NJ: Free, Fun, and Drop-In Science Programs

So they say science is falling by the wayside with today's kids. Not in NJ!  Home to geniuses like Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison, New Jersey offers tons of opportunities to expose kids to the sciences.  No need to commit to a series of expensive classes.  Whether it's kids' chemistry experiments, a visit to a planetarium, or exploring for fluorescent minerals, you can pick and choose among these fun science finds.

Five Kid-Friendly NJ Nutcracker Performances

There is just something about Tchaikovsky's Sugar Plum Dance that makes you want to bake Christmas cookies, break out the holiday lights, and sip hot cocoa on the living room couch.  Seeing a performance of the Nutcracker is a holiday tradition that we honor every year.  We have found six spectacular kid-friendly performances of the Nutcracker for your family, ranging from grand and impressive to tot-friendly...

Holiday Cooking and Baking Classes in New Jersey

It’s that special time of year, when we consume about 70% more sugar and butter in one month than in the rest of the eleven months combined. Okay, I might be exaggerating a bit. But you can at least conceal your high-sweets-consumption in the guise of a family affair—there are a few nice kids/family baking classes in NJ for holiday yummies. Enjoy!

NJ Events November 27-28: Christmas Lights Spectacular, Recycling Thanksgiving Left-overs and an Unusual Book Signing!

Yeah, you might want to just lie around and digest that turkey, but why not haul yourself and the kiddos off the couch and head out to one of the many events New Jersey is offering up this weekend. There are plenty of it’s-almost-Christmas activities, plus some great interactive museum events and my personal favorite—“The Butt Book” book signing. Can’t miss that, now can you.

NJ Weekend November 20 & 21: An 1838 Thanksgiving, Table Customs & Manners and Animal Adventures.

Get a head start on Thanksgiving by experiencing an 1838 Thanksgiving celebration at the historic village of Allaire or by brushing up on Thanksgiving table customs and manners at the historic Miller-Cory House.  With winter nearly upon us, nature centers like the Raptor Trust are offering workshops on making cozy owl homes for the winter and the Plainsboro Preserve is teaching kids how to make plaster casts of disappearing animal tracks.  Jenkinson's Aquarium is also doing a behind the scenes tour this weekend that animal lovers will not want to miss.  Finally, for those who felt Halloween was just too short, the Raices Cultural Center is hosting a fun Day of the Dead Family Day with fun art, storytelling and crafts.
