Weekend Fun for NJ Kids: Daniel Tiger, Model Trains, Scavenger Hunt
This coming weekend brings a flurry of fun things to do, from visiting with beloved characters like Curious George and Daniel Tiger to exploring the great outdoors and learning about the creatures that make their home here in the winter. You can find more activities in our Event Calendar, and our January GoList is your go-to source for the very best things to do throughout the month.
Model Railroad Show – North Haledon
This is your last chance to catch the model trains before they chug away until next year. Train enthusiasts big and small will love the Garden State Model Railway Club's show, which features steam and diesel engines, Thomas and Friends, freight and passenger trains, and detailed rural and urban scenes.

Curious George – Jersey City
Everyone's favorite curious little monkey bids farewell to Liberty Science Center this weekend. If you haven't seen the exhibition yet, or if you want to experience it one last time, now is your chance. This interactive exhibit's many delights include a produce stand where kids can weigh fruit and ring up groceries, a farm, a rocket ship with a slide, and mini golf.
Saturday, January 7
Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood – Red Bank
Daniel, Miss Elaina, Prince Wednesday, and the rest of the gang will be at the Count Basie Theatre for two performances today. The stage show, based on the popular PBS animated series, features singing, dancing, and stories of sharing, friendship, and helping others. Note: There are two showings but limited tickets remain, so grab 'em now if interested.
Winter Waterfowl Walk – Jersey City
Bundle up and head over the Liberty State Park for a guided walk along the river to see which birds have arrived for the winter. Binoculars are limited, so bring your own if you've got them! FREE
Sunday, January 8
Trail Treasure Hunt – Chatham
In this seasonal scavenger hunt at Great Swamp OEC, families can work together to find clues hidden along the trails and solve nature-related riddles. This hour-long activity is great way to get some fresh air while enjoying some together time out of the house. Pre-registration is required.
Family-Friendly Paint Party – Berkeley Heights
Bring the gang to Bottle & Bottega for a paint party. The studio will provide supplies, step-by-step instructions, and an apron; participants should bring beverages (adults are welcome to bring beer, wine, or champagne, as well as non-alcoholic drinks for the kids) and snacks to enjoy during the event. It all starts with a meet-and-greet at 11 a.m. Geared toward ages 6 and up.
