Location:
Manhattan Beach Library

A lively panel of surfers, scientists, and ocean advocates share personal stories and insights about riding waves with dolphins and why they think these intelligent animals join the lineup. This free event is held at the Manhattan Beach Library.

We can't ask the dolphins why they surf, but these four avid surfers and panelists have been up close with the dolphins and can tell of their experiences and give their opinions. The event starts with a lively music video including high-resolution footage of local bottlenose dolphins surfing,

Panel members:

  • Keani Honda-Snow: captain of the Redondo Beach High School Surfing Team and a member of the South Bay Boardriders Club.
  • John Dorsey: Professor Emeritus in Environmental Science from Loyola Marymount University and a watershed management researcher.
  • Jason Shanks: founder of the surf shop Nikau Kai Waterman located in downtown Manhattan Beach.
  • Eric Martin: Roundhouse Aquarium’s Aquarist and head of its Coastal Bottlenose Dolphin Project.

The panel is chaired by John Roberts, a member of the Aquarium Board of Directors and a Biology Professor Emeritus from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
