Walk along the trail in the Walking Dunes and search for cranberry plants with ripe berries–as well as other wonders of nature–at the South Fork Natural History Museum.

This area of dune habitat in Napeague is unique among the many sand dunes on Long Island. When the wind blows just right the sand is pushed forward, making the dunes “walk” a few inches each year. After more than 100 years, the dunes have covered and then uncovered a forest. The dunes also contain cranberry bogs that are home to sundews, a type of carnivorous plant.
