California is well represented in the White House: not one but two 20th century presidents hail from here. Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon (perhaps we’re not as blue as we think) both have presidential libraries, and if Presidents Day in an election year isn’t the time to go visit one I don’t know when is. The Nixon Library galleries are currently under renovation, but there is still a lot to see, including the Yorba Linda home in which this president was born. There’s a presidential helicopter, Mrs. Nixon’s rose garden, and not only is the event free but so is the cherry pie if you're among the first 250 guests to arrive. Maybe you took my advice and already checked this out last year. Well, then this year would be a good time to go to the Ronald Reagan presidential library in Simi Valley. Festivities outside are, free but admission to the museum (which you will want to spring for if your kids have never flown on Air Force 1) is not. One cool feature of this museum is a section of the Berlin Wall.
Of course, if this glorious weather we’re having holds, you may want to blow off the commanders in chief and instead head to the pop-up pool day at the Annenberg Beach House.
Those of us of a certain age will be delighted to know that a 70s classic double feature screens Friday at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica: Escape from Witch Mountain and Return to Witch Mountain. Kim Richards unleashes her psychic powers. Loved this as a kid; not sure what my own will make of it, but I hope I can convince them to give it a try. There are many more options for Presidents Day on Mommy Poppins’ Event Calendar and plenty of ideas for making February fun on our Monthly GoList.
