With all of this snow and more on its way, my kids are climbing the walls…literally. We need to get out of the house and get moving. Ice skating is an option, or skiing, but what if we want to move and still stay indoors? Rock climbing is the perfect mix of family-friendly fun, indoor temperatures, team building and exercise. Gravity Vault (Chatham, NJ and Upper Saddle River, NJ)
Gravity Vault has two northern New Jersey locations: Upper Saddle River and Chatham. The Bergen County location has more than 13,000 square feet of indoor climbing and 35 foot high climbing walls, while the Morris County location is slightly bigger with 14,000 square feet of indoor climbing and 40 foot high climbing walls.
Chatham’s kids class schedule includes Little Rocks (ages 5-6), After School Rocks (ages 7-13), Cliff Hangers (ages 7-13), Rock Stars (ages 9-13), Climb One (ages 10-13) and Belay Certification (ages 14+). Upper Saddle River offers Little Rockers (ages 5-6) and Belay Certification (ages 14+). This location also offers Cliff Hangers, After School Rocks, Rock Stars, After School Rocks II and Climb on for children ages 7-13. Both facilities offer school break camps and summer mini-camps.

NJ Rock Gym (Fairfield, NJ)
This indoor climbing center includes a challenging lead roof, top rope, a boulder, parties, memberships, lessons and scout programs. NJ Rock Gym hosts a 90 minute Kids Climb every Sunday from 10:30 am to 12:00pm for children 6+. Instructors provide helpful tips and will belay participants. Pre-payment is necessary, due by the Thursday before your session. Walk-ins are not allowed. Additional group classes include Introduction to Rock Climbing and Belay Certification.
The facility is open Monday thru Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Weekly specials include Wednesday night’s buy one, get one free for both students and adults. Diamond Rock (East Hanover, NJ)
With more than 3,000 square feet of uniquely sculptured surface, Diamond Rock is available for open climb with instructor guidance seven days a week. Somerset Hills YMCA (Basking Ridge, NJ)
The Somerset Hills YMCA offers members, ages 4 and up, open wall climb on Friday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Beginners will be assisted by staffed instructors. Elite Gymnastics (Hawthorne, NJ)
Elite’s Peak, Elite Gymnastics new indoor climbing wall, offers a family-friendly challenge in Passaic County. Rising to a height of 25 feet, the professionally sculpted walls provide over 2,000 square feet of climbing terrain. With 13 top ropes, lots of cracks, toe-holds, bouldering and overhangs, Elite's Peak offers plenty of unique challenges for the expert and novice alike.

Liberty Science Center (Jersey City, NJ)
If you want to try out rock climbing, but don’t want to spend a full day at a climbing center stop by Liberty Science Center. Wonder Why: Observe, Imagine, Create is LSC’s sensory stimulating exhibit. Kids can scale Mount Everest on the fossil-studded rock climbing wall.
