Fall 2015: Best New Classes for Westchester Kids

Fall is upon us and Westchester is blooming with new facilities that cater to families and a slew of new class options for all ages. Even established facilities are sprouting up with novel course offerings. Not sure where to start? We've rounded up new clsses throughout Westchester, to help keep you in the know. 

While some are traditional offerings like music and painting, we've also found an eclectic assortment including toy design, special-needs yoga and gaga. Several options are even tailored to infants as young as three weeks!

Scribble Art Workshop – Hastings-on-Hudson

Ages 18 months-Teens
This new facility offers parent-child classes for toddlers and drop-off classes for the older set. Tweens and teens can learn woodworking, fiber arts or printmaking, while younger kids can sign up for painting, sculpture or toy design. Parent-child classes are also offered for children as young as 18 months. Free trial classes are available.

What is gaga? Gaga is a team sport played with a foam ball in an octagonal pit, in which players aim below their opponents’ legs while darting away from getting hit themselves. A facility devoted to this sport is now open in Scarsdale, offering after-school programs. Classes are either 75 or 90 minutes, depending on age, and require a semester’s commitment. The classes for ages 3-4 include time in the gaga pit, plus a craft, snack and storytime.

Songs for Seeds, a children’s music program, earned the coveted title of “Best Music Class” from New York Magazine based on their Manhattan locations. Newly opened in Scarsdale, Songs for Seeds features 45-minute classes led by a three-piece live band of teacher/musicians who encourage kids to sing, play instruments and dance. At the end of class, the students are invited to sing with the band karaoke-style and play the band’s instruments (guitar, keys and drums). By mixing original kids rock 'n' roll with adult contemporary music, the band is sure to please little ones (and their adult parents!). Morning and afternoon classes are offered. Sibling discounts are available.

OSilas Art Studio - Bronxville

The OSilas Art Gallery within Concordia College in Bronxville has occasionally offered one-off art workshops for kids but has primarily been a traditional art gallery with rotating art exhibitions. This fall marks the debut of the OSilas Art Studio, which offers art classes both for budding young artists and for budding adult artists. Each semester culminates with a four-day exhibition of student art, along with a celebratory reception. An annual $25/student registration fee applies. A limited number of need-based scholarships is available.

Here&Now Yoga+Body – Scarsdale

Newly opened, this facility offers a wide selection of yoga classes for all ages. Kids classes encourage the use of imagination and creativity while instilling core life skills like attentiveness, confidence and body awareness. Fun and age-appropriate postures often mimic animal poses or draw from nature, sometimes incorporating sounds for breathing like "bumble bee breath" or a roar while in "lion pose." Here&Now offers many family-centered classes, from preschool yoga to options for tweens and teens. You'll event find options for parent and baby. 

Sugar Mama by Kim – Larchmont

After-school baking classes are offered at this new bake shop to give kids hands-on experience with measuring, mixing, reading a recipe and, of course, tasting their creations! Three sessions are offered from September through May, with a discount for those who sign up for more than one session.

Pelham Art Center – Pelham

The Pelham Art Center opened its doors in 1976 and has since served as a resource for adult and children’s art classes, kids art camps, exhibitions and community events (many of which are free). This fall, they’ve added some new classes for kids to their course catalog. New titles include “DIY Punk Art,” “Create Your Own Comic Book” and “Fun with Fiber Arts,” among others. Classes for teens and adults are also available.
