Do your kids love watching Night at the Museum? If so, they can enjoy the experience first-hand at five Long Island museums. While most are geared towards the Boys and Girls Scouts, there are opportunities for any child to participate with a parent. It's sure to be an experience you'll both be talking about for years to come. And don't forget to look into other Long Island museums your children will enjoy.
Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center
431 Main Street, Riverhead
The Aquarium's "Sleep with the Fishies" program features pizza, a craft to take home, a movie, and of course, an up close and personal view of all of the animal exhibits. You can also add in a cruise on the Atlantis Explorer Tour Boat, as well as a visit with the butterflies and birds in the Exhibition Center. Prices start at $64.50 per person.
The Long Island Children's Museum
11 Davis Avenue, Garden City
Scouts can explore the museum until bedtime while also fulfilling advancement requirements. You'll also enjoy a bedtime snack and continental breakfast. There are also specific dates set aside where scouts can bring siblings (grades K-6) along. Cost is $42 per person; email email@example.com for more info.
The Science Museum of Long Island
1526 North Plandome Road, Plandome
Your troop can earn a badge, enjoy a night hike and a campfire, and cap the event off with a morning stroll on the beach. Price is $375 for 15 scouts, $25 for each additional child (25 max). There is no charge for adults.
Cradle of Aviation
Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Garden City
Take a guided tour of the museum, then catch the show at the Planetarium or Dome Theater. Scouts can also earn merit badges.
The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum
301 Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor
Kids 7 and up can host a birthday party sleepover here, which includes crafts, games and activities, a movie chosen by the birthday boy or girl, goody bags and a bagel breakfast. Cost is $650 for 15 kids (2 adults must be present). Scouts can also hold sleepovers that includes pizza for dinner, arts and crafts, activities and breakfast. $35 per child, $20 each adult.
