100 Things to Do in New York State with Kids Before They Grow Up

We might be biased, but we think New York state has it all for families. From the gorgeous Hamptons beaches to the rugged state forests, serene lake regions, and deafening Niagara Falls to the culture and arts found in New York City on up through the Hudson Valley river towns and beyond—we feel pretty lucky.

As a state, we’re pretty good at making delicious food items, from ramen burgers and bagels to ice cream, and even wine at family-friendly vineyards on Long Island and through the Finger Lakes. There are children’s museums galore. Kids have no shortage of water and theme parks, cool playgrounds, zoos, parks, and nature, of course.

And yet, the thing about childhood is that it’s finite. The kids grow up, maybe move away. Sniff, sniff. We want to soak up every moment. So we put together this list of 100 of our favorite things to do around New York, from upstate and the Adirondacks to East End of Long Island. We collected suggestions from Mommy Poppins contributors, past and former, to fuse it all together just for you (OK, for us, too). Whether you're planning a long weekend getaway or a family day trip, you're sure to find some ideas here. Enjoy!

There's a new kid-friendly museum on the block! CuriousCity, a pop-up children's museum, opens Sunday, March 31st in Peabody, and after an exclusive sneak peek just before opening day, we learned that this new addition to our region of world-class museums is worth a visit—and soon. For just three months, this children's museum will occupy the George Peabody House Museum & Peabody Leather Workers Museum in the downtown area, offering kids seven different exhibits that invite learning, creative play, and interactive fun. Here's a preview of the unique, imagination stoking exhibits you'll see at CuriousCity, as well as some helpful hints for taking the kids.

April GoList: The Best Things to Do With Houston Kids This Month

Spring is in full swing, and we couldn't be happier. That's because, in April, there is just so. much. to. do. From tasty crawfish and spring festivals to Easter celebrations, like breakfasts and photos with the Easter Bunny and egg hunts, there's no excuse to be bored this month.

There's Free Cone Day on April 9, where you can grab some delicious free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's and a fun Clifford the Big Red Dog exhibit to take the kids to in The Woodlands. Don't miss a chance to take advantage of the outdoor rollar rink at Discovery Green, either. Read on for more family fun.

Easter Egg Hunts for Kids in New York City

Easter Sunday is April 21 this year—later than usual, but really just a hop, skip, and a jump away. One of the best ways to celebrate with kids is to attend one of NYC's treat-filled egg hunts. Most are outdoors in playgrounds and parks, zoos, and gardens, but a few are indoors at museums and other cultural spots. Many offer additional spring fun, including seasonal crafts, face painting, and live entertainment.

Remember, Easter egg hunts in NYC are extremely popular so arrive early and expect hordes. If you dislike crowds, avoid the free hunts and opt for those that carry a small fee as they usually cap the number of participants. Or get your photo op with the Easter Bunny in ahead of time at these brunches.
