We survived the heat wave! Now there's more summer fun in NYC headed our way (and slightly less sweaty temps) for the weekend. Hit Coney Island for the annual sand sculpting contest or enjoy the sounds and street performances of the first-ever Busker Festival. Head uptown for high-flying kite festival in Riverside Park, Harlem Day festivities or over to Park Ave for the final installment of the activity-packed car-free Summer Streets. Speaking of automobiles, Volkswagen Beetles take over Governors Island for the annual "traffic jam." Find more outdoor fun at Long Island City's art-filled block party and the final family field day of the season at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
If you're just looking to stay cool, try one of these destination-worthy FREE NYC splash pads. Or stay local with sprinklers in the Bronx or Queens. (If you're in Queens, be sure to sample some of the tastiest ice cream the borough has to offer to further melt away the last of the summer heat.) Plus, our Summer Fun Guide is packed with lots of seasonal attractions like mini-golf courses, amusement and water parks, carousels, and lots of free summer-only activities. Catch them while you can!
Heading to the Long Island beaches this week or Labor Day weekend? We've got suggestions for the most fun places to stop along the way with kids, plus kid-friendly hotels, and even a recommendation or two on where to pitch a tent.
Read on for all of our best bets for this weekend, August 20-21 in NYC. You can find additional options for family fun in our Event Calendar.
