Weekday Picks: Grunion Run, Easter Train, Moon Talk, March 27-31

It's natural to want to explore nature at this time of year, with the flowers, trees, butterflies, and animal kingdom all teeming with new life. And nothing says new life quite like a grunion run. Grunion season officially kicks off this week, with an exciting late night run at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Grunion runs are the stuff of Southern California legends, as the small, silvery fish come ashore after the high tide to lay their eggs on certain sandy beaches. Cabrillo Beach is known as one of the best places to see them. March is "open" season, meaning that touching is allowed, and the slippery little fish can (theoretically!) be caught by hand.

March also kicks off open season on the Easter Bunny; touching him is allowed in March and April, too, and Irvine Railroad is known as one of the best places to catch him. That can now be done every day until Easter.

Other natural highlights this week include a hands-on science nature class for home schoolers at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center in Torrance and a Moon Talk with Sidewalk Astronomers in Burbank.

Luckily, we've pulled together a gold mine of activities for families looking to keep busy during spring break—or anytime in the Big Apple. The only fare we'll be paying is to the MTA, although even that hurts with the recent fare increases.
