5 Ways to Ease the Preschool Transition for Kids — and Parents

The start of a new school year gets everyone's nerves jumping—including when it's time to make the transition to preschool.

Every child is, of course, different. Some love to dive into new adventures without so much as a look back. Others are more cautious, preferring to watch and get the lay of the land. But children and parents are bound to be apprehensive about a child's first day (week, month) in a new environment, surrounded by new people and new routines.

We asked veteran preschool teachers in the NYC metropolitan area for their no-fail tips to help make this transition a positive experience for all and came away with five top suggestions.

If you're still searching for the right preschool, check out our directory of NYC schools, as well as those in the surrounding suburbs, such as New Jersey and Westchester

Splurge-Worthy Summer Activities for Connecticut Families

The other day, as my email inbox was filling up with back-to-school information and the phone was ringing with reminders of registration deadlines for fall activities, I found myself flipping through summer photos on my phone and reminiscing, and I realized that there was one thing missing. We've had fun days at the beach and musical evenings in various parks, and even some berry picking, but we haven't had that one special adventure, the one big splurge to remember this summer by.

We have a range of interests from animals to water sports to ice cream and even camping, so there are many variables to consider. We'll be making our final decision this week, but here's what's on our short list so far:

Weekend Fun for LA Kids: Wings Over Camarillo, Leimert Park Books, Free Movies, August 20-21

Chances are, if you're not back to school already, you will be soon. That's cool, not a problem; when one door closes, we can still go down to the beach and party because, hello, SoCal. So while a few summer favorites are packing it in this weekend, others will continue on 'til the end of the month and beyond.

And who says it has to be all about summer, anyway? There's always something interesting going on here: free movies, book fairs, an outbreak of rocket fever... We can hang with the stars, eat tacos, listen to music and party in the streets—all stuff that can happen pretty much any time of year here but just happens to be happening now.

(Though I've got to tell you, if you have any summer favorites, you'd best get to them ASAP—time's a-wasting, clock's a-ticking; blink and the summer will be over.)

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Star Wars, Airplanes, Pirates August 20-21

If truth be told, the Olympics have taken over at my house these last few weeks of summer. It has been exciting to see all of the athletes compete and to see many accomplish their goals of winning an Olympic medal. However, as the games conclude, the realization that the start of school is around the corner reminds Philly families that days for summer fun are limited. Thankfully, there are many of options, as evident from our jam-packed Events Calendar.

Meet Star Wars characters from a galaxy far, far away at the Please Touch Museum. View old-fashioned cars and airplanes at New Garden Flying Field's Festival of Flight. Search for hidden treasure at Fort Miflin's Pirate Day. Or, explore a different culture at the Festival of India, Caribbean Festival, or 40th Street Summer Series.

Feel like an Olympic athlete trying to race through this weekend's activities? Narrow down your focus by searching by ages, tags, and location. Now keep reading for this weekend's top picks and go for the gold!

Weekend Fun for Boston Kids, Aug 20-21: Family Festivals, Feasts, and Fairs

My family is going to have a hard time choosing which festival to attend this weekend, with awesome-sounding options like the Play Festival (pictured), the West End Children's Festival, and the Boston GreenFest to choose from. If that's not enough, families can hit a feast or an old-fashioned country fair for a real taste of summer. Yum!

But never fear if none of those float your boat. Plenty of other picks can satisfy the gamer, astronomer, or biker among you. Finally, for a couple of completely different choices, theater-loving kids can get a peek behind the scenes, or parents can support an exciting endeavor to produce a Curious George Documentary.

Weekend Fun for CT Kids: Fairs, Dinosaurs, and Tomatoes, August 20-21

With the weather forecast for this weekend looking a little more reasonable, I'm hoping to tear the kids away from their back-to-school homework packets (a little parenting humor—they are only too happy to be torn away!) to have one more summer adventure. Will it be an agricultural fair in Bridgewater or Somers or an oyster festival in Milford or Stonington or a Dragon Boat Festival in Hartford

My more dramatically inclined child might enjoy the picnic-friendly outdoor production of Taming of the Shrew and we could probably all benefit from this bike safety event in Enfield. As we have wrested some of our backyard tomatoes from the claws of our neighborhood groundhog, perhaps the Tomato Tasting at Ambler Farm will inspire some new recipe ideas.
