Weekend Fun for Houston Kids: Candytopia, Fairy Day, June 22-23

Hot summer days mean lots of water play, and we have some excellent things lined up for all of you water-loving families out there!

For our beach lovers, check out Texas' best beaches, or see all the great things to do in Galveston, including swimming at Surfside Beach or learning how to build sandcastles at Stewart Beach. For water park lovers, see what hot spots the Houston area has to offer. Enjoy classic thrills and water tubing at Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels or splash around at Strawberry Water Park in Pasadena.

There is also lots of free fun to be had at splash pads around the city, Houston's many free pools, and a kid favorite - Noah's Ark Pool.

Weekend Fun: Summer Solstice, Mermaid Parade, Drums Along the Hudson

This weekend Coney Island hosts a little something called the Mermaid Parade, Drums Along the Hudson pounds a steady beat in Inwood, Randall's Island hosts a splashy Waterfront Festival, and you can stomp on the porches on Governors Island.

Summer solstice, celebrating the longest day of the year, spills over into Saturday revelries with family fun at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx and free workshops at Cooper Hewitt. Two terrific Shakespeare productions—in addition to the big Delacourt Theatre offering—are up and running this weekend: Hamlet, at Castle Clinton, and Romeo and Juliet on the Smith Street Stage in Carroll Gardens. Plus, superheroes can commune with like-minded do-gooders at the NYSoM SuperHero SciFi Fest.

This weekend, Mary Poppins Returns to Greenwich Village, Ralph Breaks the Internet in Brooklyn on Saturday in Harry Maze Park and Sunday in Kolbert Park as well as in Queens' Astoria Park, and families can brush up on Captain America's origin story on Staten Island.

Weekend Events: Long Island Pride Weekend, Fun Fest, Jones Beach Music

On the first weekend of summer, celebrate the diversity of Long Island on the Long Beach boardwalk with weekend events and activities at Long Island Pride Weekend.

Elsewhere on Long Island this weekend, get up close and personal with some of your favorite Long Island Sound marine critters at the Whaling Museum and Education Center, featuring a special visit from The Waterfront Center. 

Children can make ice cream, French toast, pickles, and lemonade along with other hands-on activities with Old Bethpage Village Restoration staff.

Weekend Fun: Honey Festival, Hot-Air Balloons, American Roots Music

Summer has officially arrived, and there is no shortage of ways for families to celebrate this weekend in Westchester and the Hudson Valley!

One of our top picks for June is the return of the American Roots Music Festival, a full day and evening of performances by both established and up-and-coming artists in a bucolic outdoor setting. Enjoy nautical-themed fun at the Maritime Festival (all FREE), or take to the skies at the Empire State Hot-Air Balloon Festival. Fans of large vehicles (and other fun) might enjoy the Yorktown Grange Car Show and Antique Tractor Expo, while lovers of honeybees (and lots of fun things to do) might enjoy the Honey Bee Festival.

Weekend Fun for Chicago Kids: Dragon Boats, Food and Music Fests, Vintage Baseball

It's a good thing the days are longer right now, since we're not sure how else to fit in all the fun happenings for families around Chicago. This weekend, the Grant Park Music Festival continues downtown, and kid-centric festivals include the Webster Kids Corridor Block Party hosted by local playspace favorites Little Beans and Bubbles Academy, as well as the Kid Market in Bridgeport, a showcase for young entrepreneurs, crafters, and makers.

On Saturday, don't miss the colorful Dragon Boat races in Chinatown, accompanied by a day of cool cultural activities and workshops. St. Pat's church in the West Loop is also hosting the World's Largest Block Party with inflatables and giveaways for kids. And on Sunday, round up the baseball fans in your house for an afternoon of old-timey fun at the Vintage Baseball Game in Elmhurst, which offers a peek at how the game was originally played back in the nineteenth century, with old-school rules, cheers, and jeers.

Look Up, Kids! Giant, Mirrored Hot Air Balloon Coming to Massachusetts

Come mid-July, you're going to want to keep your eyes on the sky around Boston, because you just might spot a giant, mirror-surfaced hot air balloon floating above reflecting the landscape below. Created by artist Doug Aitken and presented by the Trustees of Reservations, this 100-foot flying balloon sculpture titled New Horizon will be soaring above Massachusetts from July 12th through the 28th, 2019. Traveling from Martha's Vineyard to the Berkshires, this reflective piece of art will touch down for special events along the way. Boston, and Massachusetts as a whole, are well known for showcasing kid-friendly art, so it's no surprise that this exhibit will be no exception, featuring family-friendly dates that even the youngest of art critics can participate in.
