Beaches in Fairfield County, CT

[UPDATED 5/22/2013]

Wow…summer is here with a vengeance!  90 degrees for the second day running means this family is beach bound.  I’ve put together some of the beaches we’ll be hitting this summer.

Jennings Beach, Fairfield, CT
This large beautiful beach offers a lot of amenities: an adjacent playground, skate park, as well as on site concessions and bathrooms.  You will need a sticker for entry or ($15/weekdays, $25/weekends).  Best to come early!

4th of July Fireworks in Hartford County, Connecticut

Connecticut will be celebrating with a variety of Independence Day events and activities this season. You can find plenty of fireworks displays on the 4th of July and beyond within the Hartford County area. Dress yourself in some red, white and blue and show your patriotism by checking out one of the following fun events! Note that some celebrations are as early as June 29th.

2012 4th of July Fireworks in CT (Fairfield County)

If you live in my neighborhood, you know the 4th of July is around the bend -- not because there are flags and bunting everywhere, but because the fireworks have already started.  Practice makes perfect, I reckon.  I prefer to leave my pyrotechnics to the professionals (... and unfortunately, out of earshot thanks to a skittish 4-year-old), and this year, several cities and towns will celebrate Independence Day with a skyward spectacle.  Some locations go full blast with the patriotism, adding food, music, picnicking and more to the mix.  Why not make a day of it?!

Free and Fun Things to Do This Weekend With CT Kids: Smell the Roses, Greenfest, High Tea

It is the month of June,
The month of leaves and roses,
When pleasant sights salute the eyes,
And pleasant scents the noses.

Nathaniel Parker Willis

I grew up in the South where summer is eternal and often taken for granted. But when I moved to Connecticut, I quickly learned to savor the gorgeous summer days as a Floridian might delight in a few falling snowflakes. This weekend, take time to stop and smell the roses (literally!) and rouse your senses with the sights and sounds of the Nutmeg State.

Free and Discounted Kids’ Movies in Fairfield County, CT

Most summers, my kids have very few organized activities on their schedules.   They each pick one session of camp, and other than that, they focus on making an unholy mess out of our playroom and catching frogs in our stream.  Occasionally a frog gets welcomed into the playroom, but that’s for another post…

But alas, this is not most summers, as we are moving!  And in an effort to keep my three little banshees occupied, out of the house, and away from the moving mayhem, I’ve been somewhat maniacally investigating ways to keep them occupied.   Amongst the coolest activities that I’ve found are the many movies events offered in Fairfield County.    Most are free (always music to my ears) and some are even outdoors – very cool!

Free and Fun Things to Do This Weekend in Connecticut with Kids: CT Open House Day, Festivals, Art Shows

Even though most children have a week or two of school left, the summer fun begins this weekend with lots of festivals and free family events.  It's CT's 8th Annual Open House Day this weekend which means that museums, galleries and parks all over CT are opening their doors for free. Many are doing special events for families all weekend long. The Community Cooperative Nursery School in Rowayton is holding its 50th Anniversary Art Show this weekend featuring over 75 artists. Looks like a great way to add quality local art to your home as well as raise money for a great school. Bring your pooch to the Canine Carnival and Dog Walk at Stepping Stones Museum this weekend. There will be games for families and dogs, face painting, performances and a best dressed contest.

CT Open House Day: Hartford County Participants

On Saturday June 9, Connecticut is opening its doors to the public for the 8th annual open house. Residents are invited to explore the state’s arts, history and tourism with this exciting event for the whole family. Many of the local spots participating in this open house are offering discounted or free admission, free gifts, special exhibits, and fun activities. While participating sites will be hosted throughout the entire state I have listed here the spots located in Hartford County. The only hard part will be trying to decide which location to visit!

25 MORE Free Things to Do this Summer in Connecticut (Fairfield County)

If you're wondering whether we really need to post 25 MORE free things to do with kids this summer, I'm wondering if you're really responsible for children!  Granted, beach time, bike rides and kick-the-can with the neighbors' kids are probably all they REALLY need, but I don't think any of us is too old to forget the boredom that eventually (or immediately) creeps in.  Summer is LONG.  Marathon long when you're a parent.  You know you can't trot out all your time-killing genius at once...you've got to pace yourself!   To that end, more ideas for making the summer lazy, but memorable:
