Stepping Stones Museum for Children Debuts Math-tastic Exhibit: Cyberchase

By Sheila Hageman

Stepping Stones Museum for Children opened their new traveling exhibit this weekend, which is based on the Emmy award-winning PBS KIDS GO! math mystery series Cyberchase. The unique, educational and fun exhibit encourages children to make use of their critical thinking skills and approach math with an investigative, positive attitude.

My family visited the exhibit on opening day and spent at least thirty minutes absorbed in “math” fun.  The most interesting part was that at no time did my children even seem aware that they were “doing” math! Depending on your child’s age and stage, you can make this exhibit as consciously math-oriented as you like.  The best part is that your kids will be absorbing math concepts even if you don’t point that fact out to them.

The fun, cartoon-style exhibits were very appealing to all my children who range in age from one to seven.  My oldest most definitely got the most “mathiness” out of it, but my two-year-old was thoroughly engrossed by the bright colors and hands-on activities.  Even my one-year-old could pull himself up to some activities and feel a part of the action.

Tween Concerts: Summer Jam Live at Stepping Stones Museum

Last week my boys and I had the pleasure of attending our first tween concert at Stepping Stones Museum's Summer Jam Live Lil P-Nut is an 8 year old rapper who has been featured on the “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and currently has a deal with Cartoon Network. The boys and their friends were mesmerized as he rapped about elementary school and puppy love. When asked to have their photo taken in front of the sponsor wall the boys said they felt like they were "on the red carpet". The next day, when I saw the photo on Stepping Stone's Facebook page I couldn't help but giggle at the excitement and awkwardness in their smiles.

Keeler Tavern Museum Review: Experience a Slice of Life as it was 3 Centuries Ago

By Monika Nica

Why not take a refreshing short trip with your family back in time to visit one of Fairfield County’s many historical treasures, the charming Keeler Tavern in Ridgefield?

As soon as you walk through the doubly fortified heavy front door of the impeccably maintained white building from colonial times, you enter an entirely different age from three centuries ago. It was then that 26 brave and determined families from far-away Norwalk followed narrow paths through dense woods and rich meadows to settle in an area yet uninhabited by colonists, in the midst of an unknown wilderness to start a new community that was to become the serenely beautiful town of Ridgefield.

Paddle Away! Water sports with Kids in Fairfield County, CT

Paddle on a neighborhood pond

Kayaking is an easy and safe water sport, especially on the calm surface of a protected pond. Nearly every town offers family-friendly and safe spots for kayaking. Most operate small boat rental places at municipality-owned lakes. The Town of Ridgefield’s Parks and Recreation Center has a little boathouse on the Great Pond in Martin Beach Park with single and tandem kayaks and paddle boats that can accommodate the whole family.

Family Friendly Ethnic Meal Series - Spain

Eliza, a mother of 3 living in Litchfield County, had an inspirational moment one day while grocery shopping. Tired of the usual meatballs, burgers and Bolognese rotation, she has begun a quest to cook authentic ethnic meals from a different region each week. Last week was India, this week Spain and next week will be Israel.

With several family birthdays requiring special favorite dishes, I was only able to cook two Spanish meals this week but both were delicious.  Similar to all other Mediterranean countries, the Spanish cuisine has two basic elements- olive oil and garlic.
