Forget grocery store bouquets—by mid-summer, Connecticut fields are bursting with sunflowers and other brightly colored flowers, and many farms allow families to cut their own bouquets to bring home. Kids can enjoy selecting the most beautiful blooms to carefully arrange in vases, press into books, or weave into hair crowns. Bonus fun: One of these sunflower farms has a flower maze, too!

Pick-Your-Own Flowers Near Hartford

1. Gutt Family Farm - Glastonbury

Gutt is a family farm with an assortment of flowers available for picking. Pick and make an arrangement of sunflowers, zinnias, sunflowers, snapdragons, and Queen Anne's lace. You can also pick vegetables and fruits. Sunflowers cost $2 each. The farm is open daily.

2. Peterson's Flower Farms - South Windsor

Peterson Flower Farm is a fine place for children to pick sunflowers; they can snip tons of yellow beauties to bring home. Other flowers available for picking include zinnias, black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne's lace, hollyhocks, and more. Blooms cost $5 per pound. All you have to do is pick, weigh, and pay!

3. Easy Pickins Orchard - Enfield

Easy Pickins' is a popular orchard for families, and the flowers bloom in summer. The farm also runs a regular CSA and offers families the chance to cut their own flowers. Visitors can pick zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers, and more. EP asks guests to keep social distance when picking and paying for a harvest. Flower bunches by the cupful start at $4.99, and per stem for sunflowers.

4. Sweet Wind Farm - East Hartland ​

Find fruits and veggies and tons of flowers to pick! Children love the pink, purple, white, yellow, and orange flowers. And yes, sunflowers are in bloom during the month of August. Sweet Wind Farm is famous for Connecticut maple products, too, so make sure to grab some syrup on the way out!

5. Brown's Harvest - Windsor

Brown's Harvest is growing a beautiful field of sunflowers. There are so many that the farm is planning its own Sunflower Fair in August, with food trucks, local vendors, face painting, and hay rides. 

6. Preli Farm - Glastonbury

Preli Farm has zinnia and sunflowers available this year for cut-your-own flowers. Preli Farm also offers wonderful fresh food at its market stand, including blueberries, chicory, eggs, lettuce, blackberries, and fresh picked white onions.

7. Freund's Farm Market - East Caanan

Freund's offers cut-your-own flowers every day from 10am to 6pm. Don't miss the tasty baked treats, including cookies, donuts, cupcakes, and biscuits; there are farm-fresh tomatoes, squash, and apples, too.

8. Raspberry Knoll Farm - Windham

Raspberry Knoll Farm invites guests to wander through the flower fields to pick blooms by the pound—both perennials and annuals such as cosmos, dahlia, salvia, strawflower, calendula, and bee balm. Red sunflowers and lavender are also crops at Raspberry Knoll. Masks are required for the farm stand. Cash only. 

9. Lapsley Orchard - Pomfret Center

Lapsley Orchard has an entire acre dedicated to beautiful flowers to cut mid-July through late September. The farm plants 3,000 flowers a year. Don't miss the annual Sunflower For Kids event, held in early September.

Pick-Your-Own Flowers Near Middletown

10. Lyman Orchards - Middlefield ​

Lyman Orchards (which is also a huge pick-your-own produce location) has a massive maze carved out of tall sunflowers which opens on July 31. Children love wandering through acres of blooming fun! The maze's theme changes yearly, and 2021's theme is the character Arthur from the popular cartoon.

11. Scott's Farms - Essex

So many flowers to pick from, including sunflowers. This is a long time family farm where you can pick nectarines, blueberries, raspberries, and peaches. Flowers are sold by the pound; bring your own flower bucket to keep them in water! Flower picking continues until the first frost.

12. Old Bishop Farm - Cheshire

Flowers and herbs are ready for pick-your-own season. Berry picking is also available (call ahead) and includes blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. The flower field is easily accessible with a wide path. Tons of butterflies are enjoying them, too!

13. Buttonwood Farm - Griswold

Probably the most famous and popular place in the state for sunflowers is Buttonwood Farm. The Farm plants 14-acres of sunflowers on an annual basis as part of a charity event, then leaves them up for visitors to enjoy. Visitors can pay $2 to cut their own sunflowers. Buttonwood also serves some yummy homemade ice cream on site to enjoy with the kids. Check the farm's sunflower status on Instagram closer to the end of July for details.
