Hibachi Dining with Kids: Japanese Restaurants in CT
First, the bad news: Benihana has not yet found its way to Connecticut. If you're unfamiliar with this giant among hibachi joints, you don't know what you're missing. But the good news is there are still a bunch of great places to find hibachi (also known as Teppanyaki) around Connecticut. I'll be honest, the first time we took my daughter to a hibachi restaurant, she jumped out of her seat and hid under the table as soon as the flames ignited. It has been many years since then and these days she asks to go. While hibachi may be a bit much if you have very little littles or just kids who tend to be more anxious, it can also be a really fun family experience. You'll know whether it's right for you. If so, here are some of the hibachi hot spots around our great state!

New Haven County
Kumo
Kumo is located on Elm Street in the heart of New Haven. The mellow interior is a nice contrast to the fiery hibachi show they put on. The restaurant also features a full sushi menu and other Japanese favorites.

Tengda Asian Bistro
Located in the Whole Foods plaza on Post Road in Milford, this place has a ton of parking. That's always a good thing in my book.

Hayama
This one is right on the Post Road in Orange. Hayama has been a standard for years which has given them lots of time to get things just right.

Fairfield County
Ichiro
One side of this Trumbull restaurant is a small, intimate sushi lounge and the other is a raucous hibachi room with onion volcanoes and food flying in every direction. There is a ton of parking in the large lot located off White Plains Road in Trumbull center. Ichiro features an ambitious kids' hibachi menu including a pint-sized squid hibachi option for the very adventurous.

Hana Tokyo
Located on the Post Road in Fairfield, Hana Tokyo offers the full Hibachi experience. There is also a sushi bar/lounge as well as outdoor seating if the flames get a bit intense.

Akita
Sometimes it's just good to get out. At the end of a long day or a long week, coming up with dinner can feel next to impossible. Let Akita handle things. There is a daily happy hour from 3:00-6:30 pm with a happy hour menu and all sorts of deals and specials. Akita also has a kids' menu, not to mention an impressive fish tank on display in the entryway.

There are quite a few options at Westport's Sakura in addition to their full-service hibachi room. If flying food isn't fitting the bill, opt for some sushi or their traditional Japanese menu or you can sit in one of the Tatami rooms for a full on Japanese experience.

Nagoya
Norwalk's answer to Hibachi is Nagoya. The menu is pretty extensive with all the hibachi trimmings, sushi bar option, Japanese dishes, and a Chinese menu. You'd be hard-pressed not to find something for even the pickiest eater in this SoNo restaurant.

Koto
Groton does hibachi at Koto where there are happy hour specials and promotions for every day of the week ranging from a military discount Monday-Thursday and perks for other industries on other days of the week. See their website for details.

For a towering hibachi inferno in Clinton, head to Hanami. Tucked in a sweet little Main Street storefront, this place is well loved among the shoreline community for their hibachi and sushi.
