The Wadsworth Mansion will host the annual spring event: Daffodil Day on Sunday, April 28th, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

This family event will be held rain or shine and is free to the public, although donations are welcome and appreciated.

 

A plethora of indoor and outdoor activities include:
• 1:00-3:30 Docent Tours

• 1:00-4:00 Rock painting activity on the terrace
• 1:00-4:00 Professors of Sweet Sweet Music performance

• 1:15 Guided walk around the Mansion grounds
• 1:30-3:30 Vernal Pool Exploration with Everyone Outside

• 2:00 A Place Called Hope Raptor presentation
• 3:00 Lessons in Letterboxing at the Vernal Pool

In the front of the Mansion circle Chet’s Italian Ice, Fried Cookie Dough Factory, Franks Woodfired Pizza Truck, and Shishkabobalicious will tantalize visitors with delicious food sold from their food trucks. Bring your appetite and grab a bite.

From 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM enjoy live music with The Professors of Sweet Sweet Music (POSSM). In 2018 they released their debut album Take Your Time, a collection of original acoustic-driven rock songs that have been called a return to great songwriting. The POSSM play live shows often, and entertain crowds large and small with both covers and originals. Their style is energetic and ranges from classic rock to reggae to indie and are well known and loved in their hometown of Hartford, CT. Everyone Outside (www.EveryoneOutside.org) staff will offer a variety of outdoor family fun activities. Lucy Meigs will lead a guided nature walk to explore the Wadsworth Mansion grounds. Meet in front of the mansion at 1:15 PM.  Lisa Liesener will be at the Vernal Pool on the east side of the mansion to show the amazing creatures found in vernal pools at this time of year including frogs, salamander eggs, tadpoles, insect larvae, and more! Viewing scopes will be available. Come visit the vernal pool any time between 1:30 and 3:30 PM.  At 3:00 there will be a lesson in how to find letterboxes meeting at the vernal pool. 

At 2:00 PM there will be a presentation by A Place Called Hope, a Raptor Rehabilitation and Education Center which specializes in the rescue and care of Connecticut’s wild injured, orphaned or ill Birds of Prey. The goal of this volunteer based organization is to preserve wildlife for the future by protecting wild raptor species and promoting an understanding of how we as humans can lessen conflicts with wildlife in our very own backyards. There will be a rock painting station on the terrace throughout the day, and guests are invited to paint rocks at home to bring with them to hide among the grounds and trails.  Any rocks found, be sure to post onto the “Middletown Rocks FB” Facebook page and tag the Wadsworth Mansion.

Ongoing throughout the afternoon, docents from the Friends of Long Hill Estate will lead guided tours of the Mansion providing a narrative that details the history of the estate. Furniture donated by the Wadsworth Family will be on display in the History Room.

Guests are encouraged bring a kite to fly on the vista, enjoy independently the 103 acres of parklands and view the daffodils that will bloom sometime in April assuring us all that spring has finally arrived.
