Best Indoor Play Spaces for DC Kids

Parents of little ones agree: Getting out of the house and burning off all that youthful energy is a must for wintertime survival. It shouldn’t be surprising that the DC area has tons of indoor things to do, especially when it comes to museums. But if you just want the kids to run, jump, climb, and play (without causing a worst storm inside your house than is actually happening outside), DC has got parents covered on the creative free play side of things too.

While most of the DC/MD/VA indoor play spaces on our list do have an entry fee, don’t forget about your local library. With story times and children’s areas with books, blocks, and toys, the library can be a great (and free!) place to get the winter wiggles out.

Read on for our list of 12 of the DC area's best and most interesting indoor play spaces.

Winter Gardens: Where to Get Out of the Cold at NYC's Indoor Plazas

If you feel like you've already exhausted your favorite NYC museum or indoor play space, why not try a nearby public atrium or garden? New York City is full of semi-secret indoor public spaces, as well as not-so-secret gardens perfect for staving off cabin fever this winter with an antsy child.

Finding an indoor, tropical hideaway right in your neighborhood can be a real winter lifesaver. My son was a winter baby, and when he was a newborn, it was freezing everywhere. We found our own indoor oasis just a few blocks from our Midtown apartment, in the lush, green garden that occupies the atrium of the Ford Foundation building. There are a number of similar indoor public spaces dotted around the commercial areas of Manhattan thanks to a zoning initiative in which the city granted buildings the rights to additional air space (i.e., taller buildings) in exchange for indoor and outdoor public areas.

Bonus: Public atriums are FREE to wander into, and many offer seating, snacks, Wi-Fi, and public art. Some gardens are so steamy and warm you'll feel as if you booked a tropical getaway. (This is why we love New York, right?) Here are 12 of our favorite kid-friendly indoor urban oases for NYC families.

Free Admission for Kids at Boston Museums and Attractions

It’s been said that the best things in life are free, but when it comes to visiting museums and other attractions with kids, it’s not always clear when they are free. Mommy Poppins has set out to uncover these freebies so Boston families can enjoy the best of the city without breaking the bank. Here, we've ID'd the museums that let young children—and in some cases, all kids—in at no charge.

If you're working your way through our Boston Kids' 100 Things to Do bucket list, you may want to coordinate with the cut-off ages below; some of the museums you can catch on their free admission days, but several other attractions really drive home the bittersweet point that you're only young once.
