10 Reasons It's Great to Be a Wellesley Mom

This is the second post in our new series about why it's great to be a mom in different towns around the Hub. Got pride in your 'hood? Let us know at boston@mommypoppins.com and your town could be featured in a future post.

We know, we know...Swellesley has a reputation for maybe being a little too pleased with itself already. But when we moved here with two small kids (and one on the way) six years ago, we found out that this town—which celebrates its 136th birthday today!—has a lot to be proud of beyond all the manicured lawns and nails. Great green spaces and terrific local businesspeople make this community one of the warmest and friendliest places we've ever lived in. Here’s just a sampling of what we’re grateful for—with what’s worth checking out when you swing through the ‘burb.

13 Simple Crafts for Toddlers and Preschoolers to Do at Home

Crafts for toddlers and preschoolers are best when they require few materials, carry simple instructions, and result in either something adorable or that can be played with later. With that in mind, we've rounded up a dozen of our favorite crafts for little kids. Pin it for your next rainy or snowy day, or just one of those need-something-new-to-do days.

Many of these have a fun seasonal bent, like aluminium foil Easter eggs, or a year-round playful attitude like popsicle-stick monsters and airplanes. All of them are easy enough for little fingers with possibly a quick assist from their grown-up. Kids will exercise newfound fine motor skills and plenty of sensory play.

Find more DIY kid projects in our WeeWorks Guide. Older kids, and even preschoolers, can test out our round-up of 50 Easy Science Experiments, too.

10 Reasons It's Great to Be a Cambridge Mom

Life in the "People’s Republic" is great for many reasons—which is why we pay through the nose to live like sardines. While Cambridge is an excellent locale for all ages and sexes, it’s especially special for families. It’s got outdoor activities, delicious food, a vibrant arts scene, and world-class museums. The best part for moms is that there is always something to do, any time of year.

Parent Review: Children's World Indoor Playground in Canton

When it seems like winter might never end, parents are always looking for ways to burn off cooped-up kids' energy. Luckily, Boston is home to many phenomenal indoor playgrounds and play spaces, so there are a lot of options to choose from. After hearing great things about Children’s World Indoor Playground in Canton, I headed there for open playtime with my 4-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter. Here's the scoop for parents looking for somewhere new to spend a chilly morning or afternoon.

Beat Winter Boredom with 8 Awesome STEM Activities

Winter days can leave families in need of fun indoor activities. We worked with Sylvan Learning, a leader in STEM education for kids, to develop ideas for a “boredom buster” jar full of STEM activities. Each fun project is super simple and includes concrete STEM educational tips to bring the learning home. That’s what we love about Sylvan EDGE programs; the educators at Sylvan Learning always make sure that the kids go home understanding important STEM concepts while having fun doing it.

To make your STEM activities boredom busters jar just print out the downloadable sheets, cut out the activity cards, fold and place in a jar or bowl. Any time the kids get restless or need a screen time break, just pull an activity out for some at-home fun. Note: Some of these activities do take some preparation, so make sure to gather your materials—including freezing your colored ice sculpture shapes—in advance so you are ready to go when boredom calls...or whines, as the case may be.

Philly Family Fun Spots that aren't Boring for Parents

As a parent, it can be tough trying to please the kids without being completely bored out of your mind. Playspaces and storytimes are great for the little ones, but for adults, they can get old fast. And, let's be honest, the kids don't exactly love going to the mall or checking out the latest trendy restaurant or bar. So, what can you do to keep everyone happy and entertained? Luckily, there are some awesome spots around Philadelphia and the surrounding area that are perfect for the kids, but also not a snooze fest for parents.

8 Bowling Alleys for Philly Kids

Bowling is one of those activities that goes into and out of fashion according to how old one is. Children love it because they like to knock things down and with bowling they get points to do that. Whether you're looking for an awesome birthday party venue, or just something to on a lazy Sunday afternoon, there are plenty of bowling alleys to choose from in the area.

To make bowling a bit easier for little kids to play, most bowling alleys have ramps onto which children can put the ball to position it before pushing it down, light balls that are easier to carry for kids, and bumpers to make sure that every ball a kid (or adult) throws doesn't end up in the gutter. Add some pizza and soda, and it's a perfect afternoon.

Philly Playgroups to Beat the Winter Blues

Winter months can be tough on the whole family. When it's too cold and blustery to play outside, what do you do? Local playgroups are a great way to get everyone out of the house. Kids will love making new friends and playing with new toys, and you'll love staying warm and chatting with other adults. A playgroup can be an essential part of any stay-at-home parents life year-round, so check out these great places and see if there's one near you.
