After an eventful weekend of seeing José Mateo Ballet Theatre's magical performance of The Nutcracker, noshing our way through the Boston Public Market, and checking out the winter wonderland that has recently popped up in City Hall Plaza (pictured), we're not sure we want to go back to the weekday routine. But go back we must, so we've picked a few happenings this week that take us out of the doldrums and drop us into Antarctica, the North Pole, and the Land of Sweets. Our Event Calendar is also bursting with festive holiday events this time of year, so we highly recommend checking it out in addition to our picks below if you're looking for a mid-week escape.
Monday 12/05 – Various locations
If you have little ones who aren't yet in school, you can enjoy holiday activities like a visit with Santa minus the weekend crowds.

Wednesday 12/07 – Canton
This first evening of the Bradley Estate's 10-day "Holiday Deck the Halls" event is a celebration for children. Trees are lit indoors and out, and Frozen characters romp about while children sing songs and play games. (All ages; FREE for children, $5-10 for adults) Bonus pick: Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate with the grand opening of Boston Winter Presented by Berkshire Bank (pictured) at City Hall Plaza last Friday, so while most of the attractions were open over the weekend, the skating path and A Chocolate Story were not. The good news is that the grand opening has been rescheduled, and both ice skating and chocolate should be on hand today (fingers crossed). After checking out the scene over the weekend, we can't wait to get on that ice.

Friday 12/09 – Dorchester and Newburyport
The Nutcracker: Is it a classical ballet, like José Mateo Ballet Theatre's refreshingly original production (opening tonight at the historic Strand Theatre), or a pantomime and ballet mix of sugar plums and pies-in-the face? That depends on which one you choose this evening, though we recommend seeing both at some point during this holiday season.
