Weekday Picks for Boston Kids: Outdoor Theater, City Splash, and Mobile Red Sox; July 17-21

things to do with kids this week in Boston

With kids in tow, it can be hard—not to mention pricey—to make it to the theater, a lake vacation, or a professional baseball game. But a beautiful thing about this week (other than the weather looking up, of course), is that some of these attractions are coming to a regular old neighborhood near you...for free! On Monday, the dynamic theater group Liars and Believers bring their wacky physical comedy to a Cambridge elementary school playground. The next day, families with older kids aren't just allowed—but encouraged—to descend on the Esplanade and splash around the Charles. On Wednesday, baseball fans can have an interactive Red Sox experience in East Boston.

If you're looking to soak up the sunshine this week, consider a picnic dinner (with singalongs) on the loveliest lawn in J.P., or a stop at a world-class sand sculpture contest (before the weekend crowds descend). There are loads of other ways to stretch your legs and get your sillies out; just check out our Events Calendar, which we update daily.

Monday, 7/17—Cambridge
Cambridge's Summer in the City program brings theater and other fun, interactive entertainment to local parks. This week's show, Yellow Bird Chase, by the theater troupe Liars and Believers, is about a silly crew of maintenance workers who find—and chase—a magical bird.

Tuesday, 7/18—Back Bay
Did you know the Charles is one of the cleanest urban rivers in the U.S.? That's why the town hosts an annual City Splash, which takes place at the public dock near Fiedler Field. Note that swimmers have to be ages 12 and up, and accompanied by a grown-up. Smaller kids can lounge by the riverside and watch the revelry.

Wednesday, 7/19—East Boston
It might be tough to get to Fenway, but families can experience some Green Monster magic at the Red Sox Showcase. The mobile fun station, which rolls into West Roxbury on the 18th and East Boston today, includes pitching accuracy stations, a base-stealing contest, Green Monster selfie station, a Giant Jenga, and virtual reality games.

It's always a sweet, summery gathering at Thursdays on the Lawn at Loring-Greenough House, with food trucks, music, and lots of space to lounge and play. This week, the Children's Music Center of Jamaica Plain will lead singalongs and bring instruments for kids to experiment with.

Friday 7/21—Revere
You won't believe what contestants—some of the world's best—can fashion out of the soft, grainy stuff at the Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival. Aside from watching the artists craft their incredible creations, kids can vote for their favorites, sample from food trucks, and listen to live music.
