Weekday Picks for Boston Kids: Gumdrops, Burritos, and Movie Theater Popcorn, Dec 12-16

Our top picks for activities with kids in Boston each weekday

We can't escape the December holiday madness, so we've decided to embrace it. Our picks this week are all Christmas-themed, much like the day trip ideas we shared over the weekend. Happily, the ubiquity of holiday events means that there are lots of great choices, including opportunities to do good and eat well, see a favorite classic holiday film on the big screen, and hear members of the BSO play in concert with a light show. If you find yourself with some extra time with the kids this week and need a few more ideas, check our Event Calendar. It's is full enough to keep your family occupied all day, every day (no kidding).

Have a fun and festive week, and don't stress over the nefarious Elf on the Shelf or gifts for the family—instead, we recommend spending some time with your kids on the ice, in a theater, or at the library.

Monday 12/12Boston and various locations
If the weather clears up, surprise the kids with a trip to the ice skating rink after school. Visit an old favorite or try the new ice skating path at City Hall Plaza.

Tuesday 12/13Brookline
We love Santa, we love Anna's Taqueria, and we love Christmas in the City, an organization that hosts an annual holiday party for homeless children in Boston. So this one is an easy pick: for $10, you get chips and salsa, a burrito rolled by Santa and his helpers from Christmas in the City, and that warm, fuzzy feeling from doing something that has a positive impact on someone else.

Wednesday 12/14Boston
Goody, goody gumdrops! If you're looking for holiday entertainment that's a little different, Gumdrops & the Funny Uncle fits the bill. It's an alternative, non-Nutcracker dance/theatre performance celebrating families through an LGTBQ lens and featuring a multi-generational cast. (Ages 5+, $11-33)

Friday 12/16Cambridge
We have our pick of holiday movies on the big screen today, but It's a Wonderful Life, showing at the Brattle Theatre on 35mm film, feels especially apropos. (Ages 5+; $8-11)
