In this one-hour virtual author event, young adults in grades 6-12 are invited to an interactive discussion with Gene Luen Yang regarding everything from his early start drawing comics in the fifth grade to his work on Secret Coders, which uses storytelling to teach computer programming. How does one create an identity in America while retaining one’s roots? Gene will tell his story.

Gene Luen Yang is the bestselling writer and artist behind American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints, the Avatar: the Last Airbender comics, and many other iconic works. His latest graphic novel, Dragon Hoops, was released in March 2020. His rise to prominence as a cartoonist began in 1997, when he received the Xeric grant for self-publishing for his Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks. He is also a MacArthur Genius.
