Over 3 consecutive Saturday afternoons, using fun clay hand-building and decorating techniques good for any skill level, children will create coin containers of their own whimsy and design! All tools, materials and firing are included in this course, and work will be treated with durable glazes and firing for saving money and enjoying.

Two classes are for building and decorating with raw clay, the third class is for ceramic colors and glaze decoration, 1.5 hours for each class. Classes meet Saturdays January 8, 15, and 22, from 1 – 2:30 pm.

Children will hand build, embellish in clay, and decorate with ceramic colors and glazes an up to 2 coin containers up to 5 inches height. The instructor will introduce them to the pinch, coil, and slab building methods, as well as multiple carving, stamping, and other surface decorating and clay painting options, suitable for any skill level in clay. Self-directed themes are encouraged, or students may take inspiration for themes and subject matter from the teacher. Their work will be glaze fired to high temperature after the course and be ready to take home within 2 weeks after the final class.

Adults will be notified by email of available times for pick up after the final glaze firing is complete. An email address will be requested for communicating and coordinating pick up.

Workshop includes:

  • ·4.5 hours of instruction and assistance in building and decorating the unique clay coin containers.
  • ·Tools, materials and firing.

All levels welcome. No ceramic experience necessary.

Although clay won’t permanently stain garments, adults are encouraged to have children dress in clothes suitable for an art studio environment.

Inter-pandemic studio safety measures have been implemented: workstations are either protected by sneeze screens or socially distanced, and are furnished with a variety of disinfecting tools and agents. Contact tracing protocols will be exercised, and class-size is reduced at this time to optimize spacing of persons at all times inside the studio. Due to local and organizational mandates known at the time of this writing, mask-wearing is required at all times inside the studio.

Cancellation Policy: we reserve the right to impose a $35 non-refundable registration fee for each registration, if you decide not to take the class before it begins. We are not able to issue refunds for classes missed by the student once the course has started.

Every effort will be made to make up classes postponed by snow or other weather emergencies. Sunday afternoons following the postponed class are considered the foremost alternative. Adults are asked to look for campus snow closures on the deCordova pages on the Trustees website and to familiarize themselves with our notification protocols posted inside the studio.
