Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Music Festivals, Nature Exploration, July 14-15

Mid-July marks the halfway point of summer. (Better get cracking on those summer assignments, kids.) But, don't be blue because there is still plenty of time to check off activities from your family's summertime bucket list.

Want to hit a festival? Check out Peddler's Village's Bluegrass and Blueberries Festival for some delightful sounds and delicious eats. Create colorful tie-dye t-shirts while listening to music at the Community Arts Center's Tie Dye Music Festival. Occupy kids with inflatables and ziplines at Turks Head Music Festival as local bands jam out to great tunes.

Or maybe you're looking for a peaceful escape in nature. Take a bike ride along along the Delaware Canal Towpath, canoe the Perkiomen Creek, or harvest wineberries to make scrumptious treats. Finish out the weekend by cooling off inside a museum, taking a trip to the shore, or finding a swim class to try.

By the way, be sure to save the date for the upcoming MommyCon Philly parenting event on July 28th. Discounted tickets are available for Mommy Poppins Philadelphia readers. Make it a great weekend!

Rockaway with Kids: 25 Things to Do at the Beach and Beyond

Why schlep to the Hamptons? Thanks to its weekend-getaway vibe, Rockaway, Queens, is a popular family staycation destination in summer, and with the Rockaway ferry making daily round-trips, it's easy to get to.

Rockaway's beautiful beaches have soft sand and formidable Atlantic Ocean waves—it's the only shore in NYC where you're allowed to surf. Although this area was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, the boardwalk and Rockaway Park have been renovated with amazing playgrounds and water play areas. Read on for all you need to know to get to and enjoy this NYC summer favorite.

Kids Bowl Free: Truly Free and Cheap Bowling for Kids All Over LA

My son went to a bowling party recently that sparked an obsession with the game -- and I've since realized that bowling is a really great sport for kids. The ingrained turn-taking structure, team camaraderie, and relaxed competitiveness offer kiddos a dose of sportsmanship at a fun pace. Accommodations like gutter bumpers and starting ramps guarantee success for even the youngest bowlers. Seriously, bowling is like the unsung hero of children's athletics. And it must have been this idea that fueled the creation of Kids Bowl Free, a fantastic nationwide program designed to give youth a constructive way to beat the heat. Read on to find out how your kids can bowl free every day this summer.

5 Free Outdoor Playgroups for Boston Babies and Toddlers

As soon as the weather turned warm, I couldn’t wait to get outside with my son. And while we love going to the park or playground by ourselves to swing or play with toys, it’s extra fun when a friend or two can join us. So when I started hearing about outdoor playgroups, an increasingly popular alternative to meet-ups in houses and rec centers, I knew we had to check them out. We’ve mostly been going to the Growing Center (see below) because we live in Somerville, but all of the groups look like really fun (not to mention no-cost) ways to soak up the sunshine and fresh air while meeting new friends.
