Free Things to Do with Philly Kids in June

The month of June brings sunshine, the smell of freshly mowed grass, blooming gardens, and carefree days now that school has almost ended. As great as that is, the extra free time can also easily empty a Philly parent's wallet. The cost of keeping the kiddos entertained can really add up. But keep those debit cards tucked away! Why? Because there is an enormous amount of free fun to be had throughout the Delaware Valley, and we've got the lowdown.

There are places to cool off, movies to watch under the stars, parks to hike and picnic, and outdoor concerts to dance and sing. On sunny days, kids can explore a 'new to you' destination playground such as Manderach Memorial Playground in Limerick or pack a picnic to visit Fort Mifflin during Freedom Blast. If clouds move in, families can retreat indoors to experience free museum fun at Rodin Museum, The Rosenbach, Franklin Institute, or American Swedish Museum. Escape to air-conditioned malls for free programming to keep little ones entertained such as Kids' MusicRound at Oxford Valley Mall.

No matter the weather, there are plenty of great ways to have fun without spending a dime!

New Inflatable Water Park Opening at NJ Lake This Summer

Looking for a new way to cool off this summer? How about slipping down a blow-up water slide and splashing into a beautiful NJ lake?

That's exactly what Lacey Township had in mind—so it's installing a huge new inflatable water park in Lake Barnegat (2nd Lake) in Forked River, which is slated to open in late June. Intended for swimmers ages 8 and older, the "hydro-playground" will combine slippery waters slides, bouncy inflatable climbers, floating balance beams, monkey bars, and more.

Not heading down the shore this summer? Residents of northern NJ can check out the water park at Lewis Morris County Park's Sunrise Lake Beach Club.

Summer Outdoor Movie Series: Free (or Cheap) Family Nights Out

And... action! As summer kicks off, a familiar annual scene is playing out at locations throughout the Southland: the season of free, nearly free, and gloriously cheap outdoor summer movie series has started rolling. At museumsparks, beaches, and malls,  by land or by sea, in the early morning and by the light of the moon, families can catch both recent blockbusters and timeless classics for free or close to it. (While free is awesome, we think a dollar is still pretty good!)

Below you can find our comprehensive guide to free (and darn close to it) summer movie screenings and festivals. Click on the event names for more details, including movie titles. And keep checking back, because we'll continue to post more listings as they are announced, throughout the 2019 summer movie season.
