Weekday Picks: Fiesta Hermosa, Topanga Days, and a Birthday in Pasadena

Monday is Memorial Day, and what better place to say hello to summer than the beach? Hermosa throws in a kiddie carnival, petting zoo, live music, and more into the mix for its 44th annual Fiesta Hermosa. If a funky canyon vibe is more your family's scene, check out the Topanga Days Country Fair. Monday's highlight is the annual parade through the center of town—which is just one of the Memorial Day parades making Angeleno streets festive on Monday.

After starting the week with a holiday, you can end it with a birthday party, and it's free! The Pasadena Museum of California Art is playing host to a special event featuring refreshments, art activities, and more to celebrate its 15th anniversary.

Read on for some of our picks for the week. Be sure to check out the Mommy Poppins Event Calendar for all of the fun activities available.

As we ring in summertime with Memorial Day Monday, we'll collectively cross our fingers that June brings more sunshine than May. But no matter what Mother Nature brings us this week, there's a lot to do around town to keep kids smiling. It's a big week for sparking creativity, with interactive events at the Museum of Fine Arts and Fox Library, and a performance celebrating simple materials at the Puppet Showplace Theater. Music will be in the air at a farmer's market in Lexington and the Boston Public Library. Don't miss our Events Calendar for more family-fun ideas.

June GoList: Best Things To Do With Kids on Long Island This Month

You’ve heard of the June swoon, right? It’s originally a baseball term, defining a team that plays well in April and May only to fall apart once the calendar stretches past Memorial Day.

Kids might swoon in June, too, as the anticipation of summer vacation usurps whatever lessons still remain on the school calendar. Well, we at Mommy Poppins don't want to contribute to that, but we must say there is plenty about June that just tickles us with excitement.

On Long Island alone, there is a host of things to do in the four weeks before school lets out, including street fairs and festivals, concerts, Father’s Day celebrations, and more. The highlight might be the Mattituck Strawberry Festival, one of the largest North Fork gatherings of the year, but from Nassau County to Suffolk and out to the East End there’s plenty to keep your kids engaged until the school year concludes.

So away we go. Remember, our Long Island Events Calendar offers exciting family options as they develop throughout the month. You might also want to visit our Themes Parks and Water Parks Guide as the weather (hopefully) gets warmer.

And did we mention the Besties are here? The Bestie Awards is our reader voting contest celebrating small local businesses that make parenting on Long Island so wonderful.  Help us choose our finalists by shouting out your favorite places to make, do, eat, learn and play. Nominate your Besties now.

Weekday Picks for Philly Kids: Parades, Concerts, Movies, Festivals May 29-June 2

With a short work and school week ahead, there is no doubt Philly families are making room for extra fun.

To start, dress the family in red, white, and blue to celebrate Memorial Day with a parade in Wayne, Trappe, Media, Kennett, or Downingtown. Put on dancing shoes and get ready to jam to tunes at Chadds Ford Winery's Memorial Day Music Festival, West Chester's Swingin' Summer Thursdays, Bryn Mawr's Twilight Concert Series, or Shady Brook Farm's Wine Concert. Relax a bit either outdoors with kids of all ages or inside with babies in tow at the movies. With an entertaining and exciting line-up like this, families are sure to make some great memories this week.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for Mommy Poppins Philadelphia's Summer Brain Quest Kickoff Party at Smith on June 3! Get your tickets today!

Weekday Fun: Magic, Free Doughnuts, Stars in the Alley

If New York City kids can't get a taste of warm weather soon, don't fear: this week, there's plenty to taste, for real, with National Doughnut Day on Friday, June 2, and the ice-cream-feast Scooper Bowl launching on Thursday, June 1.

There's wonder, too, from the magic (and dancing!) of Omar's Summer Blast-Off Party in Queens to the sweet science (and a 12-ton water tank!) of Science in the Square in Manhattan. And because this is New York City, indoor entertainment never flags, with a long-running production of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe at the ready, should it rain. On Friday, Broadway musicals jump outdoors for Stars in The Alley.

Bid a fond farewell to our May GoList: here's our June Go List! Hooray! And it begins with a bit of advice: check out the monthlong deal at Luna Park for kids who bring their report cards.

New Discovery at Sea Brings Science and Nature Themes to Princess Cruises

Cruises are fun. How can you beat a giant floating resort with entertainment, amusements, unlimited food, and fun at every turn? And that’s just on the ship. My favorite part of a cruise is waking up in a new location to explore.

Now, Princess Cruises is bringing more joy of discovery to your next vacation at sea with a new partnership. Teaming up with Discovery Channel, new Discovery At Sea excursions and on-ship programming bring to life the nature, wildlife, and history of each destination. We were hosted on the Grand Princess, sailing year round from San Francisco, and the first ship to offer the new Discovery at Sea programming.
