SAT Prep Summer Camps Make College Admissions Prep More Fun

Things to do with kids: SAT Prep Summer Camps Make College Admissions Prep More Fun

Wherever you sit on the controversial issue of testing, standardized tests and the pressures that come them are part of the American educational system. New York City kids are faced with high-stakes tests from an early age, from the G&T to the ERB to Regents to the granddaddy of them all, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the exam for college-bound high school students.

In order to improve their chances for a high score, many teens enroll in SAT prep programs during their junior year. These classes usually meet twice a week for a few months, cutting into after-school activities and precious study time during an already stressful school year. So when it came time for my 11th grade daughter to face the SAT challenge, we opted for a different solution: an intensive six-day summer SAT course in rural Southern Maine. While SAT prep is the camp's main objective, the kids also have plenty of time for traditional summer camp recreational activities. The serene Maine setting on Panther Pond was just the respite that my stressed-out city kid needed.

Summer Day Camps Near NYC With Pick-Your-Own Programs

Things to do with kids: Summer Day Camps Near NYC With Pick-Your-Own Programs

Traditionally there are two types of day camps: Specialty camps that allow kids to focus on one thing (soccer, theater, robotics, art, etc.) and general interest camps, where participants spend their days rotating through a schedule of sports, swimming and arts. Lately, some general programs have started to offer more specialization, allowing kids to pick a "major" of sorts and then spend the rest of the day participating in traditional camp activities.

These kinds of customizable camps are great for kids who are really into a particular activity but don't want to give up traditional day camp fun like swimming, sports and lots of time outdoors. It also gives children more control over their schedules. Here are eight NYC-area day camps that offer this type of personal flexibility.

Starter Sleepaway Camps: Short Summer Sessions for Younger NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Starter Sleepaway Camps: Short Summer Sessions for Younger NYC Kids

Going to sleepaway camp is a rite of passage for many New York City kids. Young city slickers pack their trunks and spend four to eight weeks in the great outdoors, communing with nature and experiencing life without Mom and Dad.

If you've got an elementary schooler who's interested in trying sleepaway camp but is anxious about going away for a month (or more likely you're the one freaking out), you don't have to make such a big time commitment. These days, many sleepaway camps in the Northeast offer starter camps, one or two-week sessions specifically designed for first-timers. These mini-camps are a great way for families to test the waters to make sure you and your kid are ready to spend the summer apart. We've found a dozen diverse camps that offer these kinds of junior sleepaway programs.

Crafting on the Upper West Side

Things to do with kids: Crafting on the Upper West Side

This time of year, those languid summer afternoons spent in the park, watching your children engage in endless free play while their imaginations ran wild, seem a distant memory. Never fear, the Upper West Side has become the unofficial craft capitol of New York City, a place where neither rain nor snow will slow your kid’s creative process down. It is teeming with all-weather spots that will keep the kids engaged for a few hours, without creating chaos in your home. These hands-on activities are just the sticky mess that your child craves, with the added bonus of taking home a handmade keepsake. Here are six places to make your own crafts, perfect for the dog days of winter. Since crafting makes my family’s stomach growl, snack suggestions are listed.

Things to do with kids: Day Trips Near NYC: 10 Holiday Break Destinations for Families

Over the years, our readers have shared their favorite family-friendly day trips. Now we've got 10 more mini-itineraries to add to the list. Family-Friendly Hotels on the Upper West Side

Things to do with kids: Family-Friendly Hotels on the Upper West Side

We don't usually post about NYC hotels since, well, we all live here, and most of our readers do too. But with the holidays coming up, we know lots of out-of-town families will be looking for affordable kid-friendly places to stay. While staying in Times Square or another tourist area may seem like the way to go, we recommend the Upper West Side.

We've been focusing on this super-family-friendly neighborhood all month long, and it really is a kids' paradise with big attractions like the American Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Riverside and Central Park, and tons of places to play, eat and have fun. While hotels here are no bargain, they're usually a bit cheaper than their Midtown Manhattan counterparts. (We're not including prices though, since they change so often and many websites offer discounted rates.) Plus, since it's a residential area, visiting families can get a taste of how "real" New Yorkers live.

As a longtime UWS resident, I suggest these hotels to my family and friends when they come to town (they can't stay with me, my apartment barely fits my own family!). All five are within walking distance of the UWS' best spots and near subway lines that will have you in Midtown in minutes.

Restaurants Near the American Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan

Things to do with kids: Restaurants Near the American Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan

This week we'll wrap up our series of posts focusing on the Upper West Side, so we figured we'd give you something to chew on: family-friendly restaurants near two of the neighborhood's most popular family attractions, the American Museum of Natural History and the Children's Museum of Manhattan.

Like almost everything else on the UWS, the area's restaurants are overwhelmingly kid-friendly. There are lots of eateries where families can dine, whether you're looking for a sit-down place to enjoy a full meal or a spot where you can grab a quick casual bite.

We've rounded up 12 restaurants near CMOM (83rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue) and AMNH (79th Street and Central Park West). For additional family-friendly eating options in the area, check out our post about the best burgers on the Upper West Side.

Upper West Side with Kids: 30 Things to Do for NYC Families

Things to do with kids: Upper West Side with Kids: 30 Things to Do for NYC Families

In October, we spotlighted Chinatown as our neighborhood of the month. Now that November is here, we're going to highlight one of the most famously family-friendly areas in NYC: the Upper West Side. Mommy Poppins founder Anna spent part of her youth on the Upper West Side and NYC editor Raven was born and bred there. I've lived on the UWS since I was three myself, and I've raised two children (now teens) in the same apartment where I grew up, so we're all very passionate about the neighborhood. (That's part of why we've covered it so extensively in the past.)

Lincoln Center to 106th Street, Riverside Park to Central Park is a lot of ground to cover, and we could list a slew of hot spots and activities. But this list is our top 30 things to do with kids on the Upper West Side, and while we didn't want to skip the obvious ones (hello, AMNH and CMOM), we also included lots of offbeat ideas and unusual info about the familiar attractions.
