What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid
200908230840.jpg

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid
200908230836.jpg

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

The best ever indoor

Submitted by SG on November 3, 2008 - 10:07am.

The best ever indoor activity is building a geodesic dome/clubhouse out of only an old newspaper.
The project is fun for all ages, inexpensive, easy and the effect is quite dramatic!
Plus there is an ongoing play factor to the creation for weeks after!
Check out these and many other websites for ideas/instructions.

We make up scenarios like going into outerspace, running a restaurant, or teaching school. We'll pull out paper, scissors and crayons and get to work maybe drawing up a menu or a model of the solar system. And then we let our imagination fly.

My 3-year old daughter

Submitted by carol on November 3, 2008 - 12:05pm.

My 3-year old daughter daughter likes to "build" and create with items around the apartment.. One recent "project included lining up all the dining chairs for a "choo choo train" and bellowing to Mommy "all aboard!". She pretended to be getting on and off the train and making stops at various places (Grandma and Grandpa's house (the couch), Auntie Jean's (her play table area), Cousin Kira's (another corner of the living room) etc).... We recently converted her to a twin bed but still have her toddler mattress stored under her bed. Yesterday, she asked "Mommy, can you help me" and when I went into her room, she had pulled her toddler mattress out and wanted me to help her lift/prop it up on the side of her twin bed so she could use it as a slide! We supported it with a stool underneath, surrounded it with floor pillows and she had a good hour of fun finding things to slide down with, includign sitting on a placemat to slide a bit faster, sliding her stuffed animals and then even doing some flips. i guess jsut letting our child use her imagination and make a mess is what we do :)

Submitted by Arlene on November 3, 2008 - 1:15pm.

That geodesic dome seems like a real fun indoor activity. I definitely will check out the activity suggestions on that link.

My 4.5 year old and I love to try out different things at a time when we're stuck indoors. We do painting, drawing, reading, crafts, board games, baking --decorating cookies or shaping pretzels, making chocolate coated pretzels. And sometimes, I let her use my digital camera to photograph her toys as well as the play doh sculptures she's made, and I download the photos onto her digital arts projects folder in our computer and set it up as a slideshow.

Submitted by Amanda on November 3, 2008 - 4:51pm.

We haven't had much of a chance to play with the children in the house while it is snowing. My husband and I are originally from the north (Boston) and we moved to Florida about 4 years ago. We just moved here and the 3 youngest children haven't experienced snow yet. Our 6 year old was too little then to do too much. We are looking forward to making snowflake cutouts, playing games, and just experiencing watching the snow fall with our little ones.

Making a Catesian Diver is a

Submitted by Anonymous on November 4, 2008 - 6:22am.

Making a Catesian Diver is a fun and easy way to teach young kids about density and bouyancy. Ask your child to explain how submarines and go up and down. Then play with this experiment to find out why.

Materials ( 2 liter plastic soda bottle, soy sauce or ketchup packet, water)

Remove label from soda bottle and fill to the brim with water, add soy sauce packet and cap.

Packet should float near top, then squeeze the plastic bottle with both hands and the packet begins to sink (why?).

Stop squeezing the the packet floats back to the top of the bottle (why?)

These Cartesian Divers are named after Decartes, and come in many
varieties.

Educational Innovations in Norwalk, CT has a number of cool diver kits and
a wonderful DVD (Cartesian Diversions) . Check: www.teachersource.com

Submitted by Tamara on November 4, 2008 - 6:38pm.

Our apartment building has really long, carpeted hallways so on a rainy day we use a soft ball to play catch in the hallways. We see how far we can throw it with out hitting the ceiling. My 5 year old is over the moon about baseball, so he still feels like he has played some ball even though we have been inside all day.

A simple favorite for our two-year-old is filling the bathroom sink with a bit of shaving cream and then standing on her stool to "sculpt" in it. It is so easy, and yet a rich sensory experience for a little one. Plus, a quick rinse of hands and sink and everything is cleaned up!

On rainy days we usually go out for a bit, dance in the rain, splash in the puddles, come home and take a warm bath and drink warm drinks. Snuggle under blankets with pile of books. Then onto the games like Go Fish or a cooperative board game. Baking and preparing meals and usually snuggling / resting and talking about how much water the trees and plants can drink while staring out the window ...
