Museum Week Kicks Off with the Museum Mile Festival

6/11/07 - By Anna Fader

Continuing our free summer activities for kids in NYC, this week we're going to be posting free museum programs for kids and toddlers. The great thing about living in this fabulous city with so many world class museums is that there are tons of world class museum programs to treat your kids to. From The Museum of Modern Art to The New York Hall of Science, the free programs offered at some of these museums can be more sophisticated and higher quality than the after-school programs we shell out hundreds of dollars for. To kick the week off Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 11th is The Museum Mile Festival, a free street festival hosted by the nine museums on 5th Avenue's "museum mile." The streets will be filled with musical and other fun performances, everyone is invited to create art with chalk drawings on the street, and all the museums are free and open to the public. A couple of highlights of the festival for children to enjoy: at The Museo Del Barrio at 105th Street there will be mural making and fmaily art workshops. At 93rd Street look for Sammie and Tudie's Imaginary Playhouse. The National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts at 90th Street is having a free live model drawing lesson for kids 8-12. In front of the Guggenheim at 89th Street kids and adults can create original street art rubbings.
