What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid
200908230840.jpg

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Mommy Cards

It's day three of our Mother's Day giveaway week and the Mother of All Giveaways continues. Today we announce the winner of our Fine Art of Family Giveaway at the end of this post and continue with two prizes, Mommy Cards and Flowers, plus learn about another only in New York unique gift idea for any mom in your life. I don't know about you guys, but being that Mother's Day is still a new holiday for me, I get sort of carried away and forget that I need to get something for my mom.

Mommy Calling Cards
If you've ever tried to exchange info with a new friend at the playground only to realize that you no longer carry things like pens, then Mommy Cards are for you. The new business cards for parenting, they include your name, your children's names and your contact information. You choose from 9 elegantly designed cards and can customize in any way you like, I really like the Indigo and Swirls for Sarah designs. For this Mother's Day giveaway we are happy to give one lucky reader 100 customized cards and a carrying case. And, for anyone interested in ordering cards for yourself or for another mother, there is a special 10% discount for Mommy Poppins readers when you use the code 'mothersday' which will be valid through Sunday.

Flowers Please
What could be more classic for Mother's Day than flowers? And there is still time to order flowers from 1800 Flowers and get them to her on time! They really do have a ridiculously large array of flowers to choose from, from purple carnations to the classy Martha Stewart line which serves up beauties like elegant bouquets of orchids. We are happy to let you know that as part of our Mother's Day giveaway week one lucky reader will receive a $50 gift certificate to 1800 flowers to pamper yourself or someone else with any flowers you choose, I really like Martha's White Queen Anne's Lace and Hydrangea arrangement, oh Martha, you had me at flowers.

Plant Flowers in Her Name
And, here is another unique Mother's Day gift, you can give flowers for all the city to enjoy by having bulbs planted in Central Park in Mom's honor. With a donation of $1.50 per bulb (minimum $75), the Central Park Conservancy will plant her daffodils or tulips in the Park. The person you are honoring will receive a certificate indicating the number of bulbs planted and the date of the gift. For more information, you can contact Wendy Fortune at 212-310-6608 or wfortune@centralparknyc.org.

How to enter:
To enter this giveaway you must be a subscriber to our free emails and leave a comment on this post where you tell us your Mother's Day gift wish (yes, you can send your husband's here). By the way, dads are welcome to enter these giveaways too, as long as they are subscribers. If you are not a subscriber, you can subscribe to our emails with this link. It's free and you've been meaning to subscribe anyway (and you can always unsubscribe later).

Comments must be left by midnight on Thursday, May 8th.

Two winners will be picked at random by a random number generator, one for the Mommy Cards and one for the Flowers.

We will not use your email or the email of your friends for anything other than notifying the winners (or possibly saying thanks for the nice comment).

PS. You have until midnight tonight to leave a comment on yesterday's Metropolitan Mom's Cooking Class giveaway.

Monday's Winner:

Our winner for the Fine Art of Family necklace is Sharon K who says she is giving it to her daughter who just had a baby. Aw, how sweet.

Submitted by m- on May 7, 2008 - 1:49am.

Dream Mother's Day for me is most certainly a day at a spa, a little bit of injectable so I am no longer mistaken for kids grandmother, a foot massage and kid finally saying "mommy"!

Submitted by Emma Burnaby-Atkins on May 7, 2008 - 2:25am.

My perfect Mother's Day is spent being a mother to my boys, but with plenty of input from their father. A short sleep-in, simple breakfast in bed, a bunch of garden flowers picked by tiny hands, a hand-drawn card and all of us together on the bed in a giant eight arm family hug.

Having no children of my own (yet) my dream, for my mother, is to live a long and healthy life full of the amount of love she has shown me over the years. Her support, encouragement, and devotion has made me into the woman I am today!

Ever since having had my twin girls, I have been carrying around my plain little cards with essential contact info to give to new mom friends in playgrounds, toddler classes etc. Who has paper and pencil ready when chasing after TWO toddlers?? Would love a beautiful set of cards!!

I want a FAKE lesportsak

Submitted by kate on May 7, 2008 - 4:52am.

I want a FAKE lesportsak backpack from Canal Street--@Murakami style. Specific I know. And I'll probably buy it and WRAP it for myself to help out my husband, who is well meaning and sweet but not that great with presents.

I think those business cards are hysterical and a GREAT idea. Wish I thought of it.

Actually I really wish I could have a portrait of my son from Monkey Museum . Now that's a prize I wish I could win double time over. Here's a link....http://monkeymuseum.org for the curious.

Submitted by paige on May 7, 2008 - 6:46am.

My dream Mother's Day would be a great breakfast with my husband and boys after which I kiss all four of them as they run off to leave me alone for the day. After catching my breath I'd like to admire the gorgeous locket they have given me with all of their photos included. Then I'd just like to be thankful that we've made it through this past year and that I have my physical health back...still working on the mental part!

Submitted by Molly on May 7, 2008 - 1:32pm.

My dream present would be a weekly cleaning lady, a dishwasher, and yoga 4x a week, starting Sunday! But the bare minimum would be to go do yoga and take care of myself with no time constraints, and not come back to a diaper that hasn't been changed in 5 hours. LOVE the idea of not having to go to in-law's house, Rebekah, but it's not going to happen this year.
