Giveaway: Exit Cuckoo is Nanny Diaries with Heart
Yesterday, the lovely people at NY Family Magazine gave Mommy Poppins a terrific shout out. So if you are new to the site because of that, welcome. You've come at a great time because we just happen to be doing a giveaway today.
Before we get to the giveaway, I'd like to give newcomers a brief introduction to the site. Besides our Summer Fun Guide and Free Activity a Day for every single day of the summer, our mos popular post is A NYC Kids' Life List: 100 Things to Do with Your Kids in NYC Before they Grow Up. To dig deeper into the site use our search function at the top of the page or scroll down to the categories on the left. And as my readers know, you can always email me if you have a question or are looking for something in particular.
To find out more about our site and some of it's regular content, take a look at our about page. And if you like what you see, you might want to subscribe to our free email updates.
By the way, for my readers who are looking for preschools this year, NY Family has put together a truly impressive panel of experts for a preschool admissions seminar. Get more info in our events calendar.
But without further ado, let's get to the giveaway. Shea went to see this play, Exit Cuckoo, and here's what she thought:
When you're up to your elbows in BPA-free sippy cups, it can be hard to remember that we live in the theatre arts capital of the world. But hidden all over this city are treasures that can remind us to take advantage of the terrific talent and culture NYC has to offer.
Like, did you know that right now through the 10th of August , the Midtown International Theatre Festival is taking place? One of the highlights of the festival is a play called Exit Cuckoo, a clever and witty take on child-rearing in today's NYC. Written and performed by Lisa Ramirez, I think this is a play any mom should see.
Based on her experience as a NYC nanny for a well-to-do familly, Lisa's story follows the nanny career of a wannabe actress and the other nannies, grandmothers and children she meets. Filled with funny, and sometimes heart breaking takes on nanny diaries, the stories are moving, honest, and real. And, at the end of the day, or the play, we discover it doesn't matter if we are a working mom, a stay at home mom, a stay at home mom who works, or a working mom who stays at home, it is the babies, the children, and the kids, who need, want and love us, and those that love them, the most.
As if writing this down from personal experience as a NYC nanny isn't impressive enough, Lisa's solo performance is not just credible, it's terrific. Read the review.
If you can sneak in a date night, or a moms night out, you should check out Exit Cuckoo, at the TBG Theatre: 312 W. 36th. It's a short run so visit www.ticketcentral.com for tickets today.
We are giving away a pair of tickets to Exit Cuckoo. Just leave a comment below telling us a funny childcare story, if you have one, or any ol' comment will do. One comment will be picked at random. No anonymous comments can be counted and multiple comments from the same person will be disqualified. All comments must be entered by 8pm on Sunday July 27, 2008 to be considered. We do not use your information for anything other than contacting the winners. We're too tired and lazy to compromise your privacy anyway.

One time when I was watching
One time when I was watching my 3 yr old nephew he, somehow, got his arms, legs and head wrapped into a balloon animal he had. It was funny at first, really funny when he tried to walk around, but then he got a bit frantic when he couldn't get back out. I ended up having to pop it to free him from the grasp of that vicious orange balloon animal.
My 2, almost 3 year old girl
My 2, almost 3 year old girl is very curious and active, and wears me out every day. She is always putting small things in her mouth - anything she can find. Yesterday, she finally did it. She came to me crying that she "ate a piggie". She said she put a piggie toy in her mouth and meant to take it out, but swallowed it by accident! Because she wasn't choking, I wasn't completely freaking out, but I called her pediatrician immediately. She told me that it was all right - it was very small and would "pass" eventually, but to look for it in her stool. Then she said "Happy Hunting!" I told my daughter that she was very lucky that she didn't have to go to the doctor (she was quite worried that taking out the piggie would hurt) and that the piggie would come out of her bottom. Ever since then, when I change her diaper, she asks if the piggie came out and she can't wait to see her piggie! I am not looking forward to "finding" her piggie!!
When my daughter was about 9
When my daughter was about 9 months old my in-laws took us to an outdoor concert. Everytime the audience started to clap my daughter would smile and laugh. She thought they where clapping for her.
My 2-year old loves animals,
My 2-year old loves animals, and tries to point out how this or that object reminds him of a certain animal. Last weekend, we were on Long Island, and decided to go to the beach. On a trail he saw a 6-7-year old kid wearing a green shirt with a fishing pole. Without any hesitation, my son came over to the kid and said: 'Hi, Lizzard!", and tried to take his fishing pole away from him
When my son was was two, he
When my son was was two, he and his good friend Ava were jumping on the bed together. After a few good bounces they resorted to the full-out splat and bounce. After a very good bounce Ava announced " I fell in love" then my son jumped and shouted " I fell in the mud!" A defining moment for me about male/female differences.
