What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid
200908230840.jpg

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

photo by steve9567Tennis is a great sport for NYC kids. There are free tennis courts all over the city and you can play inside during the colder months. Now tennis is even more accessible to it's littlest players thanks to Elf Tennis and it's creator Esther Forrester. Esther, a former Division I college tennis player with over 10 years of experience teaching tennis to adults and children, has developed a new method of teaching tennis perfect for children as young as 3 years old.

What is the Elf Tennis secret? First they start with oversized foam balls and smaller nets to help smaller children get into the game and love it. But classes also focus on the 4 Fs: Fun, Fitness, Friendship and Fundamentals of tennis. Sounds like a winning combination to me.

Want to see what Elf Tennis is all about? On Sunday, March 30th at noon, ELF Tennis will be offering a free tennis demo that will feature games, music and giveaways as well as introduce their new way of teaching tennis at Congregation El Adereth, 133 E.29th Street. After the event you will be able to sign up for classes starting in April.

And exclusively for Mommy Poppins readers, you can win a series of 5 FREE tennis lessons at the E. 29th Street location! All you have to do is leave a comment on this post before Thursday March 27th at Midnight sharing your favorite sporty activity for NYC kids. We will pick one commenter at random to win the 5 free tennis lessons for a child aged 3-10.

Good Luck!

I have this picture in my mind of our family in summer - my kids as teenagers and we are all hanging out together and playing tennis - since my 2 are still little and this might be a nice way to start.

Submitted by Rosa Paulino on March 25, 2008 - 5:45am.

I think Tennis lessons are a great way to get children to exercise their limbs, heart as well as their minds. Tennis is a very challenging game which not only assists in maintaining great physical health but also develops mental focus and quick decision making. I would be honored to have my 9 year old daughter participate in such a multi beneficial sport.

Submitted by Anonymous on January 1, 2009 - 7:56pm.

Beware of Elf Tennis. In my opinion, this is a terrible program. Instructors do not show up when and where they are supposed to. My child was disappointed time and time again when she did not get a lesson she was looking forward to. I have never had an experience like this in 7 years of taking kids programs in NYC.

Submitted by Anonymous on April 7, 2009 - 11:01am.

I think Esther does a great job with little kids. Very sensitive and always gives 110 %. This is a great way for kids to have fun and learn a lifetime sport. Tennis is not an easy sport and kids must have fun or are likely to quit. Esther makes it fun!!

My 5 year old daughter takes lessons with this program and I must say that it is fabulous. She adores her instructor and can't wait to go to class every week. Definitely give it a try.
