Under the River and to the Woods…Picture 36.png

While there’s something uniquely, charmingly “New York” in buying a deli Christmas tree and dragging it home through slush-covered streets to your humble abode, the real-deal Currier & Ives experience replete with snow-blanketed countryside, horse-drawn wagons and peppermint hot cocoa: the cut your own Christmas tree farm can be found just 90 minutes away in New Jersey.

So load the Johnny Mathis in the iPod, pack an old blanket for the car roof, and head to New Jersey, where you can choose a freshly pre-cut tree, or go for the truly authentic experience of stomping through the forest, selecting and sawing your very own.

We hunted down the best Christmas Tree farms within one and a half hours from New York City where you can cut your own Christmas Tree. Below find the list plus some tips for fool-proofing your trip:

1. It’s imperative that you call prior to travel—New York City could be clear and cloudless at the same time that 2 feet of wet, white snowflakey hell falls from the sky 60 miles away.

2. Some farms limit the amount of trees they sell in a season, and shut down without any website updates, so don’t pile in the car if you can't reach them by phone!

3. Many farms allow family pets on leashes, but again, call ahead to confirm.

Submitted by Nancy Tarr on November 30, 2008 - 12:42pm.

I have such fond memories of cutting our own Christmas tree. Now that I have kids, I am amazed that my parents, my brothers (3) and sister (1) and dog all made it back from the woods in one piece. So impressed with my parents for cutting that tree down and getting onto the car and home. Thanks for the post.
