February Break for NYC Kids: Fun and Free Things to Do Over Midwinter Recess

Things to do with kids: February Break for NYC Kids: Fun and Free Things to Do Over Midwinter Recess

Since the usual week-long midwinter school break was shortened to two days due to Hurricane Sandy, we will not be updating this post in 2013. However, you can find lots of fun things to do with kids over the four-day holiday weekend in our Presidents' Day Weekend events post.

While we realize many parents may need to work over February recess (that's why we rounded up 32 cool midwinter break camps for kids), we hope you'll be able to enjoy some fun family time while school's off. If you're looking to get out of the city for a day or two, we've got lots of fun day trips (including a few you can do without a car) in our Family Travel Guide.

But there are certainly plenty of things to do right here in New York City over break, including circus and theater performances, fun in the parks and lots of cool special programming at museums. Here are many wonderful things to do over midwinter break with kids.

NYC's Indoor Gardens: Get an Early Dose of Spring at These Hot Spots

NYC's Indoor Gardens: Get an Early Dose of Spring at These Hot Spots

[UPDATED: JANUARY 28, 2013]

Although the weather has felt spring-like for the past couple of weeks, it's going to be a few months before the flowers actually start blooming. If your family needs a fix of fabulous flora right now, you're in luck. There are lots of indoor gardens in New York City where you can find thriving flowers, plants and green trees, even in the dead of winter.

From tropical spots at the botanical gardens to no-cost public atriums to hidden gems like the free Glass Gardens, here are eleven indoor havens where you can pretend spring has already arrived.

February Break Camps for New York City Kids: 32 Cool Programs for Midwinter Recess

Things to do with kids: February Break Camps for New York City Kids: 32 Cool Programs for Midwinter Recess

New York City public schools are closed Presidents Day week for midwinter break, and a lot of kids (like ours) are already counting down the days. You could take a mini-vacation, or do a day trip to a nearby ski resort, snow tubing spot or indoor water park. There's just one problem: While the kids get a break, many grown-ups still have to work.

Luckily, lots of NYC spots offer February break camps where kids can pursue all kinds of interests, from athletics to arts to academics. Some programs offer full coverage throughout the week; others are only a few hours a day in case you just want to get the kids out of the house for a bit. And while some of these camps are expensive, we've included lower-priced programs that sound like great deals. One is even free!

Snow Tubing for Kids Near NYC: Tubing in NY, NJ, PA and CT

Things to do with kids: Snow Tubing for Kids Near NYC: Tubing in NY, NJ, PA and CT

[UPDATED: JANUARY 4, 2013]

Sliding down my parents' front lawn is one of my fondest childhood memories. Since we had the steepest hill on the block, all of the neighborhood kids would come over with their sleds. I have tried to recreate those magical days for my son in New York City but the logistics can be challenging—there's rarely enough snow and lugging a sled on the subway is a drag. Plus, where am I supposed to store a sled in my apartment anyway?

That's why every winter, we jump in our car and hit a nearby snow tubing spot. It's a wonderful winter activity that reminds me of those carefree childhood days sledding with friends. No skill is required, and the only things you'll need are a tube, a hill and snow, all of which are provided by the parks. Just dress in warm duds and you are good to go.

We've rounded up 11 ski resorts in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut that offer snow tubing, most less than a two-hour drive from midtown Manhattan.
