Williamsburg with Kids: 50 Things to Do for NYC Families

Williamsburg with Kids: 50 Things to Do for NYC Families

Williamsburg has become a famous hipster haven, but there's a lot more to the Brooklyn neighborhood than dive bars and clubs. North Williamsburg, or Northside, has become quite family-friendly over the past few years as its artsy residents have welcomed children of their own, spawning many attractions for families that reflect the area’s trendy vibe, like funky baby boutiques, laid-back restaurants and cool live entertainment. Plus there's the beloved 35-acre McCarren Park featuring playgrounds, sports fields and a recently renovated pool. Although much of the neighborhood’s waterfront is currently being redeveloped, East River Park offers exceptional views of the Manhattan skyline and the Williamsburg Bridge.

Although South Williamsburg is sometimes lumped in with its northern neighbor, it’s really a separate area with its own vibe. Home to a diverse community of Hispanics, Hasidim and edgier hipsters, it has fewer family businesses than its northern neighbor, but the area feels authentically New York and is worth exploring. East of the BQE, Williamsburg continues to Graham Avenue with tree-lined streets of family homes and small shops and restaurants, many owned by local Italian families.

Throughout July, we'll be focusing on everything Williamsburg has to offer families. For the purposes of our posts, our geographical boundaries are the East River to Graham Avenue, and North 14th Street (cut short by McCarren Park) to Division Avenue, with Grand Street the divider between North and South Williamsburg. Here are our top 50 things to do with kids in Williamsburg.

NYC Bathrooms: How to Find Public Restrooms When You've Got to Go!

Things to do with kids: NYC Bathrooms: How to Find Public Restrooms When You've Got to Go!

When my kids were toddlers, they must have thought that all I cared about were bathrooms, because every five minutes or so I would ask them, "Do you need to go? Are you sure you don't need to go? Why don't you just try to go?"

They were right in a way. Even though they're all school-age now, I still like to know where the nearest accessible bathroom is at all times when I'm walking around New York City. Now I've turned my obsession into a guide so you too can easily find public restrooms in NYC.

Riverdale with Kids: 30 Things to Do for NYC Families

Riverdale with Kids: 30 Things to Do for NYC Families

Located in the northwest section of the Bronx, Riverdale has long been a home for people looking to escape the city. Once settled with stately vacation houses of wealthy New Yorkers, the neighborhood transformed into a kind of suburb when commuting by train became possible. Today, Riverdale is highly prized for its historic houses as well as its prestigious private schools like Fieldston, Horace Mann and Riverdale Country School—known as the "Hill Schools" to some. The suburbs in the city feeling continues with relatively quiet enclaves of chain stores, shopping centers and upscale high-rises mixed in with nature-filled oases, old-school family-friendly restaurants, charming children's boutiques, synagogues and historic churches.

In June, we’ll be focusing on everything Riverdale has to offer residents and visitors. We will be including all of the northwest Bronx in our coverage from West 254th Street to Edsall Avenue, from the Hudson River to Broadway, which includes Spuyten Duyvil, Marble Hill and Kingsbridge.

Here are our top things to do with kids in Riverdale.

Dumbo with Kids: 40 Things to Do for NYC Families

Dumbo with Kids: 40 Things to Do for NYC Families

Dumbo has long been one of our favorite areas to roam, and throughout April we'll be exploring the neighborhood's best places to eat, shop and play with kids.

Short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, Dumbo is a cool artsy area located mainly between the majestic Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, and spilling a bit further East. This former industrial nabe is now a cultural hot spot filled with lots of family attractions, including the stunning waterfront Brooklyn Bridge Park, which is home to Jane's Carousel, treat spots like Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and Dewey's Candy Store, adorable children's boutiques, family-friendly restaurants, and lots of opportunities for kids to enjoy movies, music and art, or get creative themselves. So many families have moved to the area over the past decade, it even has a very active Dumbo Parents Organization listserv.

Although you can get to Dumbo by subway (the A or C to High Street or the F to York Street are the closest stops), walking or biking across the Brooklyn Bridge, or taking a Water Taxi or the East River Ferry will get you closer and they are all more picturesque journeys. From Jay to Old Fulton Streets, Prospect Street to the East River, here are our top 40 things to do with kids in Dumbo.
