Victorian Gardens Amusement Park in Central Park: Rides, Games and Entertainment for Little NYC Kids

Victorian Gardens Amusement Park in Central Park: Rides, Games and Entertainment for Little NYC Kids

[UPDATED: May 20, 2013] Manhattan's only outdoor amusement park, Victorian Gardens, opens for its tenth season this coming Memorial Day weekend. It's one of those annual summer attractions that you think all New York City families know about and go to... until you realize a bunch of your friends have never even heard of it.

Victorian Gardens is especially wonderful for younger children, which is why we included it in our roundup of best theme parks for preschoolers (although elementary schoolers should enjoy themselves, too). The rides are contained in a small enclosed space so you don't have to worry about kids wandering off like at Coney Island, and there's little walking between attractions. Most of the rides are gentle (a few have height requirements) and there aren't any teens rushing through the crowd. Plus you can't beat the location at Wollman Rink in Central Park, just steps from the zoo, Heckscher Playground and the carousel.

Pennsylvania Dutch Country: 7 Fun Things to Do in Lancaster County with Kids

Pennsylvania Dutch Country: 7 Fun Things to Do in Lancaster County with Kids

Although Pennsylvania Dutch Country is only 150 miles from New York City, once you arrive you feel like you're worlds (and centuries) away. There are bucolic fields full of corn, alfalfa and tobacco, and Amish farmers on horse-drawn buggies sharing the streets with cars. The area's home to big tourist attractions such as Dutch Wonderland and the Strasburg Railroad, which is why we started visiting a few years ago when my son was in his train phase. But there are also less well-known yet equally cool places to visit, like the Choo Choo Barn, the National Toy Train Museum and the Amish Village.

Pennsylvania Dutch Country is a wonderful summer getaway, and although the season is drawing to a close there's always Labor Day weekend. It's beautiful in fall, too: My family and I visited last year over Columbus Day break and plan on going again this year.

Since we go annually, I could have written a book about the place, but don't worry, I resisted the temptation. Instead, here are our favorite things to do in Pennsylvania Dutch Country as a family, along with suggestions about where to stay.

Indoor Water Parks Near NYC

Things to do with kids: Indoor Water Parks Near NYC

[UPDATED: DECEMBER 27, 2012]

Longing for a taste of summer fun? You don't have to hop on a plane to take your family someplace warm and tropical in the dead of winter. Just jump in the car and head to one of these indoor water parks, all approximately a two-hour drive (or less) from midtown Manhattan. A visit to an indoor water park is a great way to give your kids a beach-like getaway during any season. Most of them are a hot and humid 85 degrees year-round. So pull out that bathing suit you haven't seen since last summer...but leave the sunscreen at home.

Weekend Getaway: Make a Splash at Great Wolf Lodge, Poconos

Things to do with kids: Weekend Getaway: Make a Splash at Great Wolf Lodge, Poconos

Nothing puts a damper on a weekend getaway more than bad weather. At Great Wolf Lodge, regardless of rain, snow, wind, and cold, this indoor water park is a balmy 84 degrees every day, and only an hour and 15 minutes from Manhattan! Who needs to fly to the Caribbean? We visited Great Wolf Lodge for a one night stay in early Spring with our two girls, ages four and six, and they had a splashing time!
