Seal Park, Chelsea Waterside Playground and Other Great Chelsea Parks for NYC Kids

Seal Park, Chelsea Waterside Playground and Other Great Chelsea Parks for NYC Kids

As part of our month-long focus on Chelsea, my daughter and I had the pleasure of exploring the major parks and playgrounds in the area. Although Chelsea's best known green space is undoubtedly The High Line, there are much more kid-friendly parks and playgrounds, each with its own flavor and all within walking distance of one another.

In addition to the standard climbing structures and swings, the outdoor play spots we visited had some awesome special attractions, including a charming carousel, a popular skatepark and some of the coolest water features we've ever seen. Here's where to let your kids run wild in Chelsea.

5 Free Manhattan Public Art Displays Kids Will Love

5 Free Manhattan Public Art Displays Kids Will Love

Recently we've posted about a lot of cool new exhibits, but one of the great things about New York City is that you don't need to visit a museum to expose your kids to great art. Stroll around and you'll come across public art displays in parks, plazas and even on street medians. The best thing about public art? You can experience it for FREE.

Since we've noticed a bunch of eye-catching installations around town (how can you miss that upside-down elephant or those headless bodies?), we're highlighting five public exhibits so you can take your family on a DIY art tour this spring.

Tenement Museum: NYC History Kids Can See, Touch and Experience

Tenement Museum: NYC History Kids Can See, Touch and Experience

Having emigrated to the United States from Russia in 1976 rather than 1916, the closest I got to the classic Lower East Side Jewish immigrant experience was reading Sydney Taylor's All-of-a-Kind Family book series—first as a kid, then later to my own children. So my family and I were really excited to visit the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side so we could get a chance to see how immigrants lived a century ago.

This profile of the Tenement Museum is the second in a series of posts spotlighting kid-friendly NYC historic sites vying for Partners in Preservation grants. Read on to learn how you can take a trip back in time at the museum and support some of our city's most valuable cultural destinations with the click of your mouse.

Photos from Sunday's NYC Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival

Things to do with kids: Photos from Sunday's NYC Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival

Two Mommy Poppins families went to the annual Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival on Sunday, and it was so chock-full of fabulous flowers and crazy costumes, we saw totally different revelers. (We didn't even run into each other!) That's me and my daughter, decked out with lacy parasols. We posed for so many photos, we didn't get to take many of our own. Luckily Anna and her family (who sported their own adorable hats) were able to take a bunch of colorful pictures. Check out their awesome slide show. You'll know right away why the Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue is No. 27 on our list of 100 things to do with kids in NYC.

Macy's Flower Show 2012: Ring in Spring at Brasil - Gardens in Paradise

Macy's Flower Show 2012: Ring in Spring at Brasil - Gardens in Paradise

Macy's annual Flower Show has been ushering in spring for the past 38 years in New York City. We were lucky enough to be invited to a preview of this year's edition, Brasil: Gardens in Paradise, which opens on Sunday, March 25 and runs through Saturday, April 7. The store is also offering kid-friendly activities, which makes it a perfect way to celebrate spring in New York City.
