Spring Break Giveaway Number 1: Wizard of Oz Tickets

WizardofOz.jpg

Spring Break is right around the corner and many of us are not going anywhere this year, but at Mommy Poppins we choose to celebrate the opportunity to stay home and enjoy New York CIty and all it has to offer. That's why this entire week we'll be giving away tickets to NYC's top family shows. We personally picked the best shows we wanted to see ourselves and wrangled family four packs to each one. And that's not all, we also convinced each show to offer all our readers great discount codes that everybody can use, with as much as 50% off ticket prices.

First up: Family Four Pack to The Wizard of Oz at Madison Square Garden

High Brow Culture For Kids This Weekend: Concerts, Ballet, Jazz and Art Events

Things to do with kids: High Brow Culture For Kids This Weekend: Concerts, Ballet, Jazz and Art Events

Ballet, Opera, Orchestra, Art Museums. For many people, high brow cultural opportunities like these are the best thing about New York City. And there's no reason that can't be true for kids too. Start your toddlers, preschoolers and little kids off on a diet of high brow culture tailored just for kids and before you know it you'll be taking them to the real thing.

This weekend there are a bevy of fun high brow performances your kids will love. But don't take my word for it. I've included some video clips for each show (where available) so you can decide for yourselves if this high brow culture is cool or not...oh, and most of these events are parts of series, so if you can't catch them this weekend, look for alternate performance and dates.

Take My Advice: Go See Dear Edwina

200902041412.jpgHow do you handle an ill-behaved, nose-picking younger brother? If anybody should know it's Edwina Spoonapple, a girl from Paw Paw Michigan who performs a musical advice column from her garage. Such is the set-up of the DR2 Kids Theater's production of Dear Edwina. The situation reminds me of my favorite Judy Blume stories from childhood and the storytelling of Dear Edwina is just as vivid and fun as those books are. Add the terrific music and you have the best of childrens' theater.

TADA!: Youth Theater Kids Really Get In To

200902041045.jpgConfession #1: Children’s shows typically bore me to tears. Yes, even my own children’s school productions. Get them up, get them on, then get me out. Add my children’s short attention spans and tendency to sigh and squirm excessively throughout performances and you get the picture of our typical family theater outing. So it was with great trepidation that I ventured to TADA Youth Theater with my five- and three-yr old daughters for a child-actor only production, “Golly Gee Whiz!”. Much to my surprise, not only did the show command the undivided attention of every child in the audience, but (confession #2) all of us, repeat ALL of us, thoroughly enjoyed the show.

(Keep reading for a special offer from TADA!)

Soul of Shaolin Kicks Butt

200901200044.jpg

Soul of Shaolin is a spectacular performance by the troupe that opened the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the first production from the People's Republic of China to Ever appear on Broadway. Part circus, part martial arts demonstration and part Peking Opera, held together by a simple—and not entirely necessary—plot, Shaolin is one amazing feat of acrobatics after another, with swords flashing, spears rattling and a little dancing thrown in.
