Free Photo Fun: Get Your Face Plastered in Times Square As Part of the Inside Out Project

Free Photo Fun: Get Your Face Plastered in Times Square As Part of the Inside Out Project

Have you (or your kids) always dreamed of seeing a giant photo of your face in Times Square? Thanks to the Inside Out public art project, you don't need to become famous for that wish to come true. Through Friday, May 10, this innovative photo booth truck parked near the TKTS Booth will be spitting out huge, one-of-a-kind, black-and-white portraits of anyone willing to wait on line for FREE. And although you are allowed to keep your poster, the artists behind the installation encourage participants to have their portraits plastered on the Times Square pedestrian plazas instead. After all, that's the whole point of the Inside Out Project.

I went to Times Square to check out this public art installation in person to see if it was as cool as it sounded. And it totally is. However, there are some important things to know before you go, especially if you're bringing kids. Read on to find out the best time to go to avoid the crowds, how you can make a group reservation and what the Inside Out Project is all about.

5 Unique Mother's Day Brunch Ideas in NYC: More Than Just a Meal

Things to do with kids: 5 Unique Mother's Day Brunch Ideas in NYC: More Than Just a Meal

Mother's Day always feels like so much pressure. Where will you brunch? Will the kids like it? Will you ever be able to pay off the credit card bill? With Mother's Day fast approaching on Sunday, May 12, it's time for you (or your partner) to start planning (although what's the old adage? If you want something done right...).

Our NYC Kid-Friendly Restaurant Guide is filled with fantastic family restaurant recommendations in all five boroughs, including eateries with family entertainment. We even have two posts dedicated to traditional Mother's Day brunch options, both swanky spots and reader favorites. But if you're looking for a unique Mother's Day brunch experience, one that comes with more than just a meal, we have five offbeat ideas that include arts and culture, a cool waterfront foodie tour and fun at an iconic racetrack.

Knightwatch Medieval Sleepover: Spend the Night at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

Knightwatch Medieval Sleepover: Spend the Night at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

Ever since the movie Night at the Museum came out, sleepovers at famous New York City spots have been popping up all over town. First the American Museum of Natural History did it (it was the star of the film, after all) and then the Bronx Zoo, Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square and a bunch of other attractions followed suit. These sleepovers are a fun way for families to experience familiar places in a brand-new way, and are a great source of revenue for the hosts, many of which are nonprofit.

Now the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine is getting in on the overnight action with Knightwatch Medieval sleepovers (which, in case you're wondering, are totally secular). My seven-year-old daughter and I attended one back in March and overall we had an incredible time. Having the run of the gorgeous Gothic Revival church is a rare and memorable experience that made us feel like queens for a day (make that a night).

DJ Classes for NYC Kids: Learn Scratching, Mixing and Digital Music Making

Things to do with kids: DJ Classes for NYC Kids: Learn Scratching, Mixing and Digital Music Making

In the age of digital everything you might think old-school DJing with those shiny black things we called records would be dead and gone. But not so. There are a number of DJ schools in NYC that teach retro turntable action as well as digital music mixing via state-of-the-art technology.

While most of these programs are primarily aimed at adults, three Manhattan schools also offer classes for junior DJs. Mixing, blending, scratching and beats are just some of what participants learn, and by the end they have their own professionally recorded demos. (Too bad they'll need to wait until they're 21 to actually spin at a club.) Here are the top DJ classes for tweens and teens in New York City.

Kids Can Climb the Walls, Literally, at Bklyn Beast

Kids Can Climb the Walls, Literally, at Bklyn Beast

"This place is awesome!" My nine-year-old son proclaimed as we left Bklyn Beast, a brand-new East Williamsburg gym where kids (and adults) can get a real workout trying Brazilian martial art capoeira, different types of street dancing and parkour. What's that last one you ask? A week ago, I wasn't sure myself. Also known as "the art of displacement," parkour is a kind of obstacle course training where the goal is to get from one spot to another by overcoming a variety of physical barriers. Participants climb, jump, scale and swerve in order to conquer whatever is in front of them. It's a sport, a mindset, a philosophy and tons of fun. What kid doesn't want to try to leap tall buildings in a single bound?
