Buying Local Food: CSAs in NYC with Delivery

Things to do with kids: Buying Local Food: CSAs in NYC with Delivery

The locavore movement is expanding in NYC, and there are some great new ways to get fresh, locally grown meats and produce on your table. This year, we've discovered new CSAs that give you more flexibility and convenience, including ones that deliver to your door, or allow you to order à la carte rather than requiring you to purchase a full share.

If you aren't familiar with CSAs—Community Supported Agriculture groups—they are organized arrangements that allow consumers to buy food directly from the farmers. This helps give small farmers the financial support they need to make it through the planting season, and it gets fresher food on your table. Usually you buy a share (or a half share) of a farmer's output, and in return you receive a boxful of vegetables, fruit, eggs, cheese or meat every week throughout the growing season. If you're interested in signing up for a CSA, now is the time since spots fill up fast.

There are drawbacks to traditional CSAs: You have to pick up your food at a central location, you often have to put in volunteer hours and you don't know what will end up in your box ("you get what you get and don't get upset"). Plus, if you travel or go away on weekends during the summer, you'll miss part of your share, which is a drag since CSAs are kind of expensive. But this year, we've found some new, more flexible options.

Best Places for Families to Bike Ride in Manhattan

Things to do with kids: Best Places for Families to Bike Ride in Manhattan

May is Bike Month in NYC, making it a great time to learn how to ride (for free), join in a group tour or participate in other fun cycling events. Of course, bike-riding season lasts all spring, summer and fall.

Taking a spin in the city is one of my family's favorite pastimes. Until recently, we used to zip around town with our son in a bike seat,. We'd ride to work, the park, really anywhere we had to go.

Now that he's outgrown his seat, my son's working very hard on mastering his two-wheeler so we can continue biking everywhere. In the meantime, we're planning out a bunch of awesome riding routes for the summer. Here are our picks for the best places to bike with kids in Manhattan and beyond.

Bike Month NYC May 2011: Free Activities, Classes and Festivals for Kids and Families

Things to do with kids: Bike Month NYC May 2011: Free Activities, Classes and Festivals for Kids and Families

Riding your own two wheels around town is one of the great joys of being a kid. New York City is extremely bike friendly, and since May is Bike Month, there's no better time for families to go out and pedal.

Throughout the month, there are a slew of learn-to-ride and bike safety classes for kids and adults (where you can often snag free gear like helmets), bike tours and parades, festivals and other cycling-themed events.

Bike Month officially kicks off with the Five Boro Bike Festival on Saturday, April 30. This first-ever fest sounds very family friendly, and is followed by the super-popular (and long sold out) Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 1. But don't worry: There are plenty of other ways for you to get biking.

KidsHousecalls: the NYC Pediatrician Who Comes to You

Things to do with kids: KidsHousecalls: the NYC Pediatrician Who Comes to You

As the mother of a baby and a toddler, I dread taking the kids to the pediatrician's office. When one is under the weather or has a checkup scheduled, it’s a pain to drag the other one along. Plus, I worry about all of the germs they’ll be exposed to.

And when either of them gets sick during the night, I always wish the pediatrician could come on over, just like the doc did on Little House on the Prairie. It's so difficult to diagnose what's wrong over the phone.

That’s why I was very intrigued when I found out about Dr. Edward Kulich, a New York City pediatrician who only does house calls. So when I noticed my 10-month old was showing signs of pink eye, I gave him a call.

Where to Buy Cool Easter Candy in NYC and How to Get Rid of It Post-Holiday

Things to do with kids: Where to Buy Cool Easter Candy in NYC and How to Get Rid of It Post-Holiday

Time to break out those baskets: Easter is this Sunday! And here I feel like we were just making New Year's resolutions the other day.

If you feel the same way, and one of your resolutions was to, ahem, get in shape before summer, chocolates and jelly beans and Peeps, oh my!, could derail those plans.

But everything in moderation, I say! If you're going to indulge, do it with candy you love. We've rounded up some sweet places to stock up on unique treats, and we've also got tips on what to do with your leftovers (because you know your kids can't eat it all).

And if you're looking to fill those baskets with non-caloric goodies, we've got ideas for those too. Now let's hop to it!
