Celebrate Halloween at the Last Weekend of Ascarium at the New York Aquarium

Celebrate Halloween at the Last Weekend of Ascarium at the New York Aquarium

When we think Coney Island, we generally picture it in summer. Beaches, hot dogs, roller coasters—it already seems so far off. But fall is actually a wonderful time to visit New York City's most famous beach community, while it’s still pleasant out and the crowds are thinning. The Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium gives us another great reason to go since it transforms into the Ascarium every October in honor of Halloween. This year's edition has a pirate theme, and there are cool activities and Halloween decorations at every turn. Plus plenty of kids dress up in their Halloween best, which adds to the festive atmosphere. Ascarium at the New York Aquarium is a good deal, too: For every full-price general admission adult ticket purchased, one child under age 12 in costume gets in free. But you've got to hurry: This is the very last weekend of Ascarium this season. Missing it would truly be frightening.

Pumpkin Patches Near NYC: Pumpkin Picking and Hayrides An Hour or Less From New York City

Things to do with kids: Pumpkin Patches Near NYC: Pumpkin Picking and Hayrides An Hour or Less From New York City

It seems like all the stores have put up their spooky displays and decorations, so we can't deny it any longer: The Halloween season is nigh! And what's All Hallows' Eve without the perfect pumpkin? You could grab one from your local farmers' market, grocery store or one of the three pumpkin patches right here in New York City. But for a more memorable experience, head to the country to a pick-your-own-pumpkin place. Many of these spots offer additional activities for families, like hayrides, bouncy houses and corn mazes so you can turn your hunt into a fun seasonal day trip.

Like our recent roundup of nearby pick-your-own-apple orchards, these 11 pumpkin patches are all about an hour (or less) from midtown Manhattan by car. We even found a few that you can reach via public transportation. One important note: It's imperative that you call ahead to confirm hours, pricing, availability and attractions, otherwise you might find the crop gone or the place closed.

Maker Faire New York 2012: What's New for NYC Kids at this Hyper-Creative Festival

Maker Faire New York 2012: What's New for NYC Kids at this Hyper-Creative Festival

This coming weekend, World Maker Faire New York returns for its third annual edition. This massive festival of creativity and innovation was launched in San Mateo, California in 2006 by Make magazine, and has since expanded to numerous cities, including ours. It is, in a word, awesome. Lots of other adjectives come to mind too, like outrageous, over-the-top, thought-provoking, enriching and (unfortunately for me) indescribable. It's very hard to explain why World Maker Faire is so cool—hopefully the photos in our slide show give you an idea of what a unique experience it is. My family and I went to the first two fairs and were totally blown away, and we're counting down the days until Saturday arrives!

On the last weekend of September, the fairgrounds surrounding the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park will be filled with 500 makers, crafters, tinkerers, hackers, thinkers and artisans, who will proudly show off their wacky robots, homemade needlework, music-making gizmos and zillions of other wild things. Organized into four themed (more or less) Zones, Maker Faire boasts a crafts pavilion, a slew of Young Makers under 18, and fantastic demos, installations and performances like the Coke Zero & Mentos Fountains, Circus Warehouse’s acrobatics and a life-size recreation of the board game Mouse Trap. New this year: An enormous clothing swap with fancy sewing workshops, make-your-own miniature cars and no-rules race, plus areas sponsored by Disney, Chevrolet and other big brands. While Maker Faire's counterculture, do-it-yourself spirit seems to get a little more commercial every year, don't worry: We've gone through the program and there will still be plenty of super-offbeat stuff you won't see anywhere else.

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Fall 2012: 13 Awesome Installations for Families

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Fall 2012: 13 Awesome Installations for Families

So far this month we've told you about the best kids' concerts and family theater shows debuting this autumn. Now we finish up our fall culture coverage with a roundup of kid-friendly museum exhibits that are opening over the next few months.

While the Brooklyn Children's Museum, the Children's Museum of Manhattan and the Children's Museum of the Arts are all unveiling cool new interactive installations, there are a bunch of awesome exhibits at "adult" museums that are sure to please school-age kids and their parents, like the Guggenheim's Picasso retrospective and the Metropolitan Museum's show of artists inspired by Pop Art great Andy Warhol. Plus the Toy Museum of NY is moving to a brand-new Brooklyn location and original illustrations by Beatrix Potter will be on display at the Morgan. Here are 13 family-friendly exhibits that we're looking forward to taking our kids to this fall.

Best NYC Kids’ Shows for Fall 2012: 13 Fun Family-Friendly Productions

Best NYC Kids’ Shows for Fall 2012: 13 Fun Family-Friendly Productions

We continue our fall culture preview with a look at the best family-friendly shows premiering over the next few months. I've been covering NYC kids' theater for many years now and I can honestly say that this is one of the most exciting seasons I've ever seen—and not just because Annie is being revived on Broadway. (When I saw the original, I related to Annie. Now that I'm a mom, I bet I'll be more sympathetic to Miss Hannigan!)

As always, there are a bunch of page-to-stage adaptations, including Fancy Nancy, A Little Princess and two different productions of The Velveteen Rabbit. But there are more offbeat offerings too, like a puppet show starring a giant cockroach, yo-yo tricks and a literal political circus. So don't blow all of your money on Broadway! Here are 13 kids' shows worth splurging on this fall.
