Best Things to Do with NYC Kids: April 2013

Things to do with kids: Best Things to Do with NYC Kids: April 2013

Spring has finally arrived and so has our new NYC Go List, our carefully curated roundup of the absolute best things to do with kids in NYC throughout the month. Given the season, our April Go List includes lots of annual outdoor favorites. These are the kinds of must-do events that Mommy Poppins families put in their calendars every year, like the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival, Tribeca Film Festival's huge Family Street Fair, the Queens County Farm Museum's Children's Carnival, Staten Island's St. George's Day celebration and the old-school Street Games fest in East Harlem. Plus there are a number of other cool-sounding family shows, concerts, films and other experiences worth fitting into your family's schedule. Best of all, four of our 12 picks are FREE and almost all are under $15 per person.

As always, if an event piques your interest, be sure to click through to our listing for all the details, including address and time. And although we've said it before we'll say it again: In NYC, really cool things to do with kids often sell out in advance or fill up really quickly, especially when they're free. So buy your tickets ASAP or arrive early whenever possible.

Now get your calendars ready! Here are the top 12 things to do with kids in New York City this April.

Things to do with kids: This Week: Easter Weekend, NYC Spring Break Fun, High-Tech Makerspaces

Mommy Poppins NYC may have been quieter than usual this week due to school recess and a pesky server outage, but our lives have been busier than ever. Our bloggers have been running all over our awesome city, enjoying all kinds of spring break fun. My daughter and I laughed our heads off at Bello Mania at the New Victory Theater (we even got the famed clown's autograph!), saw Rodgers and Hammerstein's reimagined Cinderella on Broadway and stopped to smell the blooms at Macy's India-themed Flower Show. (We posted a gallery of Flower Show pics on our Facebook page.) Meanwhile Anna and her family explored the Guggenheim's Gutai: Splendid Playground exhibit and enjoyed the first great playground day of spring. We hope you and your kids have been enjoying spring break as much as we have.

Of course we still have many days of fun ahead of us. Sunday is Easter and there are lots of egg hunts throughout NYC as well as Fifth Avenue's fabulous Easter Parade. And then Monday is April Fool's Day and our Boston site came up with 10 hilarious pranks to play on kids. And don't forget to check out our roundup of special spring break activities. There are so many great things going on in NYC right now, you'd need an entire season to try them all.

Here's what else we covered on the NYC site this week:

Spring break continues through Tuesday for NYC public school students and there are plenty of things to do this weekend and beyond, including the New York International Auto Show, which rolls into the Jacob Javits Center this week. The NYC Parks Department is also holding its lottery for free spring swimming lessons. Find out how to try to snag a spot for your child.

These are just a few of the great things going on this Easter weekend. Our best bets are below. You can find additional suggestions in our Event Calendar. Have a happy holiday, whatever you're celebrating!
