Things to do with kids: Culture for Kids: Slash - Paper Under the Knife Exhibit at Museum of Art and Design

Whereas folded paper origami is pretty much a household word nowadays with those delicate little animals and boats taking center stage at craft shows and kiddie cultural events, cut paper arts have never quite made it into the spotlight. Until now. For  luckily cut paper's the new star of the Museum of Art and Design's (MAD) latest show, Slash: Paper Under the Knife. 

With giant cardboard sculptures, intricate cut paper designs, amazing pop-ups, and other unique paper creations, both children and adults will marvel at the many ingenious paper works and wonder that something as simple as paper can be used in so many different ways to create such different works. It's a very cool show even for little kids so don't let the somewhat surgical and slightly ominous title dissuade you from taking your gang.

You're invited to the Doris Cole Abrahams Theatre at The Studio School to hear a panel of theatre professionals speak about their experiences in the theatre.  Our middle school students will perform a variety of selected pieces from Shakespeare (monologues, dialogues, and sonnets), which the panel will then critique.  Afterward, the children and audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panel.

Bilingual Buds, a Mandarin Immersion School for children ages 1-10, opens its doors on Saturday, February 13th with a “Year of the Tiger” Open House event. Parents get a sneak peak at the Upper West Side’s newest preschool while children join the New Year fun with Mandarin storytelling, singing, cooking, and arts & crafts. All activities are free of charge and open for all from 9:00 -11:00 AM, and 1:00 – 3:00 PM.

The first of its kind in New Jersey, and now Manhattan, Bilingual Buds offers a full immersion Preschool, Kindergarten, Summer Camp program in New York and Beijing, After School classes for children ages 5-10, and Mommy & Me.
