What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid
200908230840.jpg

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Best Holiday Light Shows

Earlier in the week we wrote about some of the outrageous Christmas light displays on houses around NYC. But, here are some places to see more traditional Holiday Light Shows:

200812172206.jpg

Time Warner Center's Holiday Under the Stars
Through December 21st, 5pm to close
Time Warner Center, Columbus Circle
FREE

In the main lobby of the Time Warner center hang twelve 14 ft stars, but every evening they come alive as part of a festive holiday light show with music, brilliant colors and, new this year, simulated snowfall. The show takes place every half hour from 5pm and lasts for 15 minutes. The magical "snowfall" is only on Fridays through Sundays. Turn this into a nice little family evening with a stroll through the mall and maybe a hot chocolate stop.

Grand Central Kaleidoscope Light Show
December 1-January 1, 11am-9pm
Main Concourse, Grand Central Station
FREE

Every half hour in the main concourse of Grand Central a spectacular light show takes over the walls, displaying fantastic winter scenes and colors. It's a perfect activity to do between ice skating at Bryant Park and seeing the Holiday Train Show in Grand Central.

Turtle Back Zoo (pictured above)
Through January 4th, 5-9pm
560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, NJ, 07052
Admission: $6 Adults $3 Children

If you're missing the Bronx Zoo's Holiday Light Show this year, head to Turtleback Zoo in New Jersey where 100,000 bulbs and 50 lit displays light up the zoo at night.

Thank you for all of the wonderful ideas! I do not live in NY, but will visiting for Christmas. We leave in just a couple of days and I have been researching online trying to find unique things to do while we are there. I came upon your site and have really enjoyed it. There are many great things I have been able to add to our "to do" list while we are there! Thanks for the great suggestions! Merry Christmas!!
